Summary: We present SSK, a semiautonomous robotic pen-drawing system capable of creating pen art on large nonplanar surfaces. Our system consists of a seven-degree-of-freedom impedance-controlled manipulator and a three-degree-of-freedom holonomic mobile platform. By using a vector-graphics engine, we generate Bezier spline curves based on an artist's pen drawing input, and then our system finds minimal configurations for the mobile platform to cover the entire canvas surface while considering manipulator reachability. Through impedance control, our system replicates the spline drawing on the target surface, compensating for uncertainties and incompleteness of canvas-surface representations and various robotic and sensor noises. We demonstrate the ability of our system to create visually pleasing and intricate pen art on large, nonplanar surfaces.
