Summary: Staging liver fibrosis has always been a challenge in viral hepatitis and other liver diseases. Non-invasive tests have been developed to overcome the limitations of liver biopsy. This review discusses the use of serological and physical markers for liver fibrosis staging in chronic hepatitis B and C. Furthermore, it addresses the issue of evaluating liver fibrosis after HCV cure.

Summary: The coinfection of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) can lead to severe liver disease, but a robust HBV/HCV coinfection cell culture model has been established to investigate their interaction. This model supports infection and replication of both HBV and HCV, allowing for a better understanding of their molecular details and outcomes.

Summary: Functional cure of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the treatment goal of new HBV therapies, defined as clearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), with or without anti-HBs seroconversion, and undetectable serum HBV DNA. Studies have shown that achieving functional cure generally leads to a favorable clinical course, with reduced risk of hepatic events and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there is still a low yet definite risk of HCC occurrence, especially in male patients who achieve functional cure after 50 years of age.

Summary: The relationship between HCV infection and extrahepatic manifestations has been well-documented, with viral eradication significantly reducing non-liver related deaths. Treatment with direct-acting antivirals has evolved rapidly and become the standard-of-care for addressing these complications. Individualized regimens with consideration for potential hematologic toxic effects and drug interactions are recommended for cancer patients with HCV infection.

Summary: The prevalence and burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in children are poorly understood. Vertical transmission and injection drug use are the main modes of infection. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in preventing HCV-induced severe liver disease. Direct-acting antiviral drugs have shown to be as safe and effective in young HCV patients as in adults.

Summary: The study revealed that statins have limited treatment efficacy in patients on dialysis with hyperphosphatemia. Higher serum phosphate levels, both at baseline and during treatment, were associated with reduced protective effects of statins on major adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause death. This suggests that the presence of hyperphosphatemia may contribute to the resistance of dialysis patients to statins.

Summary: In patients on kidney function replacement therapy (KFRT) with COVID-19, the male sex is not a risk factor for mortality among kidney transplant recipients but remains a risk factor among dialysis patients. The use of immunosuppressants in kidney transplant recipients, among other factors, may have narrowed the difference in the immune response to COVID-19 between men and women, and therefore reduced the sex difference in COVID-19 mortality risk.

Summary: A survey was conducted among kidney transplantation experts from 39 European countries to investigate the factors influencing kidney transplantation rates. The study found that low-rate countries took more measures regarding staff, equipment, and facilities, while high-rate countries took more measures specific to deceased donor transplantation. Furthermore, low-rate countries reported more potential barriers, such as lack of knowledge and distrust in the healthcare system.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that microRNAs are involved in the pathophysiology of renal diseases, including kidney transplantation. In this study, the researchers investigated the changes in circulating microRNA expression and their involvement in antibody-mediated rejection. They found that certain microRNAs were significantly decreased in samples with rejection, and these microRNAs were associated with myeloid-related pathways and CD14+ monocytes.

Summary: This retrospective observational study in Europe examined the demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes of 4480 systemic light chain (AL) amyloidosis patients who initiated first-line treatment from 2004-2018. The study found that bortezomib-based regimens were the most commonly used first-line therapy, and only a minority of patients received autologous stem cell transplant. The study highlighted the high early mortality rate and the lack of improvement in survival outcomes for the frail stage IIIb population despite the introduction of new therapies.

Summary: This study analyzed the infection prevention and control strategies implemented by dialysis centers in Europe during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that most centers implemented measures such as fever screening, hand disinfection, and mask-wearing to prevent the spread of the virus. Summary: We examined the correlation between uric acid levels and the risk of kidney failure and death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Higher uric acid levels above 10 mg/dl indicated an increased risk of kidney failure and death, while lower levels below 5 mg/dl were associated with death before kidney failure. These findings suggest that uric acid levels can serve as a potential marker for assessing the risk of adverse outcomes in CKD patients.
