Summary: This study establishes geometric topological models and dynamic models for landing legs with single air chamber in the buffer structure of the reusable landing vehicle and validates the accuracy of the dynamic model. The effect of hard point positions on the landing system performance is analyzed, and an optimization algorithm is used to improve the design parameters. The optimization results show a reduction in maximum landing impact acceleration response and buffer structure maximum force, as well as an increase in design margin.

Summary: This paper presents a vision-based guidance technique with a log polynomial closing velocity controller for autonomous landing on a moving target. Through simulations and field experiments, the approach is shown to achieve faster and more accurate landings compared to traditional methods. The success rate for landing on a moving target was 22 out of 27 attempts, with the maximum error magnitude being 35 cm from the landing target center.

Summary: Millimeter-sized electrostatic film actuators, inspired by the efficient spatial arrangement of insect muscles, achieve a muscle-like power density and enable robotic applications in confined spaces. These actuators have a hierarchical structure and are composed primarily of flexible materials, allowing them to be designed for a wide range of manipulation and locomotion tasks while being robust and compact. These actuators are expected to have widespread use in soft robots, medical robots, wearable robots, and miniature autonomous systems.

Summary: This paper introduces a biologically inspired Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture called LGN-CNN, with a first convolutional layer mimicking the role of the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN) and showing a rotational symmetric pattern. The network demonstrates rotation invariance in the first layer, contrast invariance capability, and compares the Retinex effects with a LoG. Statistical study on the filters of the second convolutional layer is done based on biological data, showing similar behavior to the RFPs of LGN and V1 cells.

Summary: Thermophiles can survive in high-temperature environments due to their proteins' hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Inspired by this mechanism, a novel MOF-801 based shear thickening fluid (STF) with improved performance at high temperatures has been developed, replacing hydrogen bonds with hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.

Summary: Data-driven economic tasks have gained attention for better decision-making and policy design. Machine learning and artificial intelligence have made it possible to solve complex economic tasks with unprecedented performance. However, expertise in ML or AI is not standard in economics, and automatic machine learning (AutoML) models are developed to bridge this gap. This paper presents a benchmarking study of different AutoML techniques for economic tasks and finds that biologically inspired AutoML models slightly outperformed non-biological AutoML, demonstrating the potential to improve economic understanding while reducing the analysis burden on economists.

Summary: This paper presents a novel control allocation method that allows conformal trailing-edge controls to generate yawing moments with no coupling, simplifying the required control suite. It demonstrates the method through modelling a coordinated roll manoeuvre of a tailless aircraft using trailing-edge flaps for yaw control only. Results show that a coordinated rolling manoeuvre can be achieved with a reduced control deflection compared to non-conformal controls.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of dynamic experimental rigs used for studying insect wing aerodynamics, aiming to facilitate comparison of existing data and provide insights for the design of new rigs. With a consistent set of parameters, the experimental methods are characterized and different approaches are objectively compared. A detailed catalogue is presented for the tested flow conditions, wing morphologies, and kinematics. The mechanical design considerations of the rigs and the aerodynamic measurements obtained from them are discussed.
