Coordinated Roll Control of Conformal Finless Flying Wing Aircraft

Thomas R. Shearwood, Mostafa R. A. Nabawy, William J. Crowther, Clyde Warsop

Summary: This paper presents a novel control allocation method that allows conformal trailing-edge controls to generate yawing moments with no coupling, simplifying the required control suite. It demonstrates the method through modelling a coordinated roll manoeuvre of a tailless aircraft using trailing-edge flaps for yaw control only. Results show that a coordinated rolling manoeuvre can be achieved with a reduced control deflection compared to non-conformal controls.

A Practical Framework for Multi Agent Experiments in Aerial Robotics

Samuel J. C. Knox, Verdon J. Crann, Peyman Amiri, William J. Crowther

Summary: A framework for distributed control of rotary wing aerial robots is proposed, aiming to evaluate novel rules for safe intersection of high-density aerial traffic flows. The framework utilizes open-source flight controller firmware and commercial hardware, with communication via WiFi. Evaluation results show that the framework is scalable and has practical engineering applications.

Dynamic experimental rigs for investigation of insect wing aerodynamics

Paul Broadley, Mostafa R. A. Nabawy, Mark K. Quinn, William J. Crowther

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of dynamic experimental rigs used for studying insect wing aerodynamics, aiming to facilitate comparison of existing data and provide insights for the design of new rigs. With a consistent set of parameters, the experimental methods are characterized and different approaches are objectively compared. A detailed catalogue is presented for the tested flow conditions, wing morphologies, and kinematics. The mechanical design considerations of the rigs and the aerodynamic measurements obtained from them are discussed.

Estimating the impact of drone-based inspection on the Levelised Cost of electricity for offshore wind farms

Khristopher Kabbabe Poleo, William J. Crowther, Mike Barnes

Summary: The use of drones for infrastructure inspection has become routine due to its benefits of reducing risk and costs. Research shows that replacing rope-access inspection with drones can significantly reduce operational costs and decrease revenue lost due to downtime compared to traditional methods.
