Seven species of Lophius are known worldwide, six in the Atlantic Ocean and just one in the Northwest Pacific. The genus supports valuable fisheries (except for Lophius vaillanti), most for a long time, though the exploitation of Lophius gastrophysus along the coast of Brazil is relatively recent. The manuscript reviews the current knowledge of phylogeographic and biological traits of Lophius species, pointing out common aspects in the life histories. Within the Lophiidae, the genus Lophius is phylogenetically the most derived, vicariance and dispersal having played a significant role in driving speciation. Life histories seem to have followed similar adaptive processes from a common ancestor along with similar environmental characteristics. The genetic structure of populations is poorly known, and usually, genetic differentiation is limited. Life-history aspects (age, growth, reproductive cycle, early stages, and feeding ecology) are addressed, and fisheries are reviewed. However, knowledge of many aspects of the biology and ecology (e.g. validation of the growth pattern, maturation processes, spawning areas and periodicity, recruitment processes, mortality, stock identification, and habitat needs) remains limited.

Summary: This study utilized the Ecopath food web model to describe the Portuguese continental shelf ecosystem and investigated the decline of the Portuguese sardine stock through available time series. The results highlighted trophic interactions, fishing, and environmental forcing as the main factors driving ecosystem dynamics and sardine decline.

Ontogenetic shifts and feeding strategies of 7 key species of Gadiformes in the western Mediterranean Sea

Encarnacion Garcia-Rodriguez, Miguel Vivas, Jose M. Bellido, Antonio Esteban, Maria Angeles Torres

Summary: The study explores the trophic ecology of 7 key species of Gadiformes in the western Mediterranean Sea, finding that most species undergo ontogenetic dietary shifts, increasing their trophic level with size. Different feeding capabilities and strategies were observed among these co-occurring species in the study area, providing valuable information for improving the management of sustainable fisheries in the region.

First approach to the growth and age corroboration of Northeast Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) in Northern Iberian waters

M. R. Navarro, J. Landa, B. Villamor, R. Dominguez-Petit

Summary: This study for the first time analyzed the growth pattern and parameters of Atlantic chub mackerel in Northern Iberian waters, revealing two different growth patterns. The results obtained from otolith marginal analyses and length frequency analyses supported the age estimation criteria used, and the growth parameters from DAE are proposed for future stock assessment.

Evidence of stock connectivity, hybridization, and misidentification in white anglerfish supports the need of a genetics-informed fisheries management framework

Imanol Aguirre-Sarabia, Natalia Diaz-Arce, Iker Pereda-Agirre, Inaki Mendibil, Agurtzane Urtizberea, Hans D. Gerritsen, Finlay Burns, Ian Holmes, Jorge Landa, Ilaria Coscia, Inaki Quinconces, Marina Santurtun, Antonella Zanzi, Jann T. Martinsohn, Naiara Rodriguez-Ezpeleta

Summary: Genetics can help understand population connectivity of white anglerfish and its interaction with black anglerfish. The study found that white anglerfish is likely a single panmictic population, some specimens classified as white anglerfish are genetically identified as black anglerfish, and the two Lophius species naturally hybridize. The results set the basis for a genetics-informed white anglerfish assessment framework.

Summary: Seafood is a vital source of protein globally, but balancing food security and ocean health is a challenge. A food-web comparative modeling approach highlights ecosystem singularities of the Gulf of Alicante (Western Mediterranean Sea)

Encarnacion Garcia-Rodriguez, Marta Coll, Miguel Vivas, Jose Maria Bellido, Antonio Esteban, Maria Angeles Torres

Summary: The study utilized a food-web comparative modeling approach to characterize the ecosystem of the Gulf of Alicante and compare it with neighboring ecosystems. Results indicated that the major differences in the Gulf of Alicante were due to lower primary production, leading to lower catches and higher importance of the demersal compartment. Despite higher ecotrophic efficiencies and mortality rates, there was lower fishing pressure in the Gulf of Alicante compared to neighboring areas, suggesting a moderate level of marine resource exploitation.

Summary: An international research effort found that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a reduction in marine recreational fishing activity worldwide, with negative impacts on the blue economy and fishers' health and well-being. Advanced fishers showed higher levels of concern and negative impacts from the pandemic compared to basic fishers.

Applying length-based assessment methods to fishery resources in the Bay of Biscay and Iberian Coast ecoregion: Stock status and parameter sensitivity

Marta Cousido-Rocha, Santiago Cervino, Alexandre Alonso-Fernandez, Juan Gil, Isabel Gonzalez Herraiz, Margarita Maria Rincon, Fernando Ramos, Cristina Rodriguez-Cabello, Paz Sampedro, Yolanda Vila, Maria Grazia Pennino

Summary: This study focuses on the sensitivity analysis of two length-based methods, namely length-based indicators (LBI) and length-based spawning potential ratio (LBSPR), in the Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Coast ecoregion. The results indicate that both methods are sensitive to variations in input parameters, with the accuracy of the L-infinity parameter having a more significant impact on the assessment results.
