Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions on psychosocial and behavioural outcomes among Australian adults with type 2 diabetes: Findings from the PREDICT cohort study

Julian W. Sacre, Elizabeth Holmes-Truscott, Agus Salim, Kaarin J. Anstey, Grant R. Drummond, Rachel R. Huxley, Dianna J. Magliano, Peter van Wijngaarden, Paul Z. Zimmet, Jane Speight, Jonathan E. Shaw

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures significantly impacted the quality of life, behavioral risk factors, and healthcare utilization of adults with type 2 diabetes. However, anxiety and depressive symptoms remained relatively stable.

IDF diabetes Atlas: Global estimates of undiagnosed diabetes in adults

Katherine Ogurtsova, Leonor Guariguata, Noel C. W. Barengo, Paz Lopez-Doriga Ruiz, Julian Sacre, Suvi J. Karuranga, Hong J. Sun, Edward Boyko, Dianna Magliano

Summary: According to the 2021 estimates, nearly half of adults with diabetes are unaware of their condition. The highest proportions of undiagnosed diabetes were found in Africa, the Western Pacific, and South-East Asia regions, while the lowest proportion was observed in North America and the Caribbean.

Effect of a 3-Year Lifestyle Intervention in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Kassia S. Beetham, Rathika Krishnasamy, Tony Stanton, Julian W. Sacre, Bettina Douglas, Nicole M. Isbel, Jeff S. Coombes, Erin J. Howden

Summary: This study demonstrates that implementing a 3-year lifestyle intervention can significantly improve exercise capacity and physical activity levels in patients with chronic kidney disease. By providing care from a multidisciplinary team, including nephrologists, nurses, exercise physiologists, dietitians, etc., the lifestyle intervention group showed significant improvements at 12 months and maintained higher levels thereafter. Additionally, the intervention blunted declines in neuromuscular fitness. The results of this study highlight the importance of implementing lifestyle interventions for patients with chronic kidney disease.

Clinical Utility of Cardiovascular Risk Scores for Identification of People With Type 2 Diabetes More Likely to Benefit From Either GLP-1 Receptor Agonist or SGLT2 Inhibitor Therapy

Julian W. Sacre, Dianna J. Magliano, Jonathan E. Shaw

Summary: Differentiating risk for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) from heart failure hospitalization (HHF) is important in glucose-lowering therapy. Higher cardiovascular risk is associated with a greater increase in HHF compared to MACE. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) may offer greater cardiovascular protection in individuals at highest MACE risk.

Association of biomarkers and risk scores with subclinical left ventricular dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Amera Halabi, Elizabeth Potter, Hilda Yang, Leah Wright, Julian W. Sacre, Jonathan E. Shaw, Thomas H. Marwick

Summary: This study investigated the association between clinical scores and biomarkers with subclinical LV dysfunction and evaluated their ability to identify patients who require echocardiography. The results showed a weak relationship between these assessment tools and subclinical LV dysfunction. They had limited ability to discriminate abnormal global longitudinal strain, diastolic function, and left ventricular mass.

High night-to-night variability in sleep apnea severity is associated with uncontrolled hypertension

Bastien Lechat, Kelly A. Loffler, Amy C. Reynolds, Ganesh Naik, Andrew Vakulin, Garry Jennings, Pierre Escourrou, R. Doug McEvoy, Robert J. Adams, Peter G. Catcheside, Danny J. Eckert

Summary: The severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can vary significantly from night to night. However, it is unknown how this night-to-night variability in OSA severity affects cardiovascular outcomes such as hypertension. This study aimed to determine the impact of variability in OSA severity on the likelihood of hypertension. The study involved monitoring 15,526 adults over approximately 180 nights, using an under-mattress sleep sensor device and repeated blood pressure measures. The results showed that high night-to-night variability in OSA severity is a predictor of uncontrolled hypertension, independent of the severity of OSA.

Can a Targeted Social Media Campaign Increase Reach of, and Engagement With, Heart Failure Self-Management Resources in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities in Victoria, Australia? An Evaluation Including Cost

Stacey Matthews, Jasmine Just, Garry Jennings, Janet Bray, Jesse Lewis, Amanda Buttery

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of a targeted social media campaign, using translated video animations, in promoting heart failure self-management educational resources among culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Victoria, Australia. The results show that the translated campaign had a significantly higher reach, initial views, and click-through rates compared to the English campaign. However, it also had fewer views of at least half of the video and higher costs-per-click.

Development and Use of a Cardiac Clinical Guideline Mobile App in Australia: Acceptability and Multi-Methods Study

Stacey Matthews, Brooke Atkins, Natalie Walton, Julie-Anne Mitchell, Garry Jennings, Amanda K. Buttery

Summary: Health professionals supported the development of the Smart Heart Guidelines app. Although initial downloads were promising, the frequency of using the app was low and deletion rates were high. Further evaluation of users' experience of the most and least useful components of the app is needed.
