Summary: This study assessed the effects of vitamin D supplementation on arterial stiffness in obese adolescents. The researchers found that a high proportion of obese adolescents had vitamin D deficiency and supplementation improved carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and reduced the risk of arterial stiffness.

Summary: This study found that the impact of childhood body mass index (BMI) on adult carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is partly mediated by multiple cardiovascular risk factors in later life. The deleterious effects of adiposity on vascular structure begin early in life and accumulate over time.

Summary: In this work, we propose an end-to-end boundary-salience multi-branch network, BSMNet, to identify the carotid intima-media from ultrasound images. Our method exploits prior shape knowledge and anatomical dependence to improve the accuracy of boundary identification and incorporates a strip attention model for segmenting thin strip regions. Experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of our method, achieving about 0.02 improvement in Dice and HD95 compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Our method is expected to advance the analysis of systemic arterial disease with ultrasound imaging.

Summary: The study found that patients with Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) have reduced endothelial function, indicating cardiovascular risk, but no changes in vascular structure. Therefore, long-term management of these patients should include evaluation of vascular parameters.

Summary: The study found that snoring is associated with vascular remodeling in overweight/obese young to middle-aged adults, even in the absence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This suggests that snoring may contribute to cardiovascular disease risk and warrants further investigation in larger prospective cohorts.

Summary: Arterial alterations in children, including intima-media thickness and vascular diameter enlargement, are important hemodynamic parameters that correlate with higher cardiovascular risk in adults. This study provides values for vascular diameter, intima-media thickness/diameter ratio, and tensile stress in children, with differences observed between sexes and body mass index influencing these parameters. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure also significantly impact these vascular parameters.

Summary: Subclinical carotid atherosclerosis is an important factor in cardiovascular risk estimation by SCORE2. Carotid ultrasound improves the predictive performance of SCORE2 for cardiovascular risk assessment. SCORE2 may over-predict the risk in individuals without carotid plaque and under-predict the risk in those with carotid plaque.

Summary: Compared to the general population, people with adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) have a higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, impaired carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the association between non-functioning adrenal incidentalomas (NFAIs), metabolic profile, and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as a predictor of atherosclerosis. The results showed that patients with NFAIs had higher waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting insulin, glucose levels, and CIMT compared to the control group. These findings suggest that patients with NFAIs exhibit a range of metabolic abnormalities.

Summary: This study investigated the pulse wave velocity (PWV) in children with kidney failure and found that girls are more susceptible to cardiovascular complications and have higher mortality rates compared to boys. The PWVz values significantly increased in girls and were associated with GFR decline, high blood pressure, and low LDL levels. After transplantation, GFR decline and longer time to transplantation were associated with higher PWVz values in girls.

Summary: This study found that chronic kidney disease disrupts endothelial mechanics, leading to endothelial dysfunction. The data showed that serum from CKD patients increased the stiffness of the endothelial glycocalyx and cortex, while decreasing the height of the glycocalyx. Furthermore, the study found that serum from hemodialysis patients increased the expression of MR and the mechanical stiffness of the endothelial cortex, an effect that could be reversed by MR and ENaC antagonists.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the characteristics of hearing loss in patients with dRTA caused by different gene mutations. The results showed that LVAS is common in dRTA patients and may influence the type and severity of hearing loss. Therefore, regular audiological follow-up is essential for early detection of possible late-onset or progressive hearing loss in dRTA patients.

Summary: A 3-year-old female patient presented with cyanosis and intermittent eyelid edema, and a lobulated mass in the right atrium obstructing the superior vena cava was discovered. Despite the inability to completely remove the mass due to its origins in the right atrium myocardium and extending towards the sinoatrial node, successful surgical intervention and histopathological evaluation identified the mass as a fibroma, leading to significant alleviation of postoperative symptoms.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of acute kidney injury (AKI) in pediatric COVID-19 and MIS-C, and found that the frequency of AKI was 22.7% in COVID-19 and 15.3% in MIS-C. Independent risk factors for AKI in COVID-19 patients were the need for vasoactive/inotropic agents and vomiting/diarrhea, while in MIS-C patients it was the need for vasoactive/inotropic agents and severe inflammation. The study emphasizes the association between AKI and age in MIS-C patients and suggests the need for long-term follow-up for kidney functions.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk for cardiovascular comorbidity in pediatric Behcet's disease (BD) patients, and found that BD patients with vascular involvement may have more cardiovascular risk factors. Furthermore, cardiovascular assessment should be considered in all BD patients, and ABPM may accurately define hypertension and cardiovascular risk in pediatric BD patients.
