Combined effects of human pressures on Europe's marine ecosystems

Samuli Korpinen, Leena Laamanen, Lena Bergstrom, Marco Nurmi, Jesper H. Andersen, Juuso Haapaniemi, E. Therese Harvey, Ciaran J. Murray, Monika Peterlin, Emilie Kallenbach, Katja Klancnik, Ulf Stein, Leonardo Tunesi, David Vaughan, Johnny Reker

Summary: The study reveals that 96% of the European marine area is affected by combined effects from multiple human pressures, with 86% of the coastal area and 46% of the shelf area being impacted by physical disturbances. The results suggest that Europe's seas are widely disturbed, highlighting a potential discrepancy between ambitions for Blue Growth and the objective of achieving good environmental status within the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

Assessment of collective pressure in marine spatial planning: The current approach of EU Member States

Trine Skovgaard Kirkfeldt, Jesper Harbo Andersen

Summary: The study found that EU Member States have limited and inadequate examples of cumulative impact assessments in national MSP processes, with most processes addressing collective pressure through CIA as part of a strategic environmental impact assessment. While MSPD requires MSP to ensure collective pressure is kept below a level compatible with good environmental status, the study found few examples of ecosystem-based MSP.

Monitoring of environmental DNA from nonindigenous species of algae, dinoflagellates and animals in the North East Atlantic

Steen Wilhelm Knudsen, Martin Hesselsoe, Jens Thaulow, Sune Agersnap, Brian Klitgaard Hansen, Magnus Wulff Jacobsen, Dorte Bekkevold, Soren K. S. Jensen, Peter Rask Moller, Jesper H. Andersen

Summary: Researchers have developed and validated eDNA assays for marine nonindigenous species. The results show that eDNA sampling is faster and easier compared to conventional monitoring methods, and the use of eDNA can provide more accurate information on the distribution of species.
