Summary: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are a prevalent work-related health issue, and hazardous postures pose a risk to their development. This study developed an inertial sensor-based approach to evaluate posture in industrial contexts, and found that traditional posture risk assessment tools do not consider posture risk differences among different operators.

Summary: In manual assembly systems, the differences in workers' skills, expertise level, and physical effort perception greatly influence assembly line balancing and system performance. This study proposes a methodological framework and an easy-to-use Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Rebalancing Problem, which considers workers' performance variability, integration of worker-dependent physical exertion constraints, and the possibility of using trainers to assist inexperienced workers. A bi-objective linear programming model is introduced to minimize cycle time and the number of reassigned tasks while integrating new workers with different characteristics. The results obtained from three real cases demonstrate the successful application of the developed model in manufacturing companies to address workforce turnover and skills heterogeneity.

Summary: This paper proposes a bi-objective manual assembly line design model to avoid excessive daily vibration exposures in occupational sectors. The model minimizes total equipment costs and vibration levels by respecting ISO 5349-1 threshold values, using the epsilon-constraint approach to find the Pareto frontier. The method can solve small and medium size instances, providing safe vibration exposure levels with low additional investment.

Summary: This study proposes a multi-stage hybrid algorithm based on a backtracking searching algorithm (BSA) to realize an effective configuration that can further improve production efficiency and reduce equipment cost for sequence-dependent AEALs. The proposed method involves developing an AEAL configuration model and using a multi-stage hybrid algorithm to efficiently acquire the optimal solutions to machine number and process sequence. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method are validated through a case study.

Summary: This study proposes a dynamic simulation-based framework utilizing swarm intelligence algorithms to optimize the design of hybrid assembly lines in the automotive industry. Experimental results show that the proposed methods outperform conventional meta-heuristics and achieve comparable or better results than the experts' solution. The findings highlight the effectiveness of utilizing swarm intelligence algorithms and dynamic simulation-based frameworks in industrial settings, as they can significantly accelerate and enhance assembly line design optimization and reduce time to market.

Summary: Manufacturing systems are social-technical systems that involve interactions between humans and technologies in shared workspaces. Collaborative manufacturing systems combine the benefits of human workers and Industry 4.0 technologies and are useful in flexible and adaptable contexts. The key problems in designing these systems are line balancing and equipment selection. We propose a multi-objective approach that optimizes investment costs and ergonomics, and developed a solving algorithm based on epsilon-constraint to achieve a trade-off between these objectives.

Summary: Demand forecasting is crucial for supply chain decisions, and this study introduces a multivariate approach to predict manufacturer's demand for components using leading indicators. Comparing ARIMAX with Machine Learning models, the research shows superior forecasting and inventory performance with the multivariate approach. Additionally, while ARIMAX performs better at predicting demand signals in the early stages of the component's life-cycle, ML-based models outperform it in later stages.
