Summary: The study revealed that insulin resistance and FGF21 elevations were observed in overweight-obese individuals living with HIV, suggesting a compensation mechanism. In contrast, in the control group, FGF21 correlations appeared to be mainly related to weight and waist circumference.

Summary: This study evaluated the genetic characterization of 132 HIV-1 pol sequences from children and adolescents undergoing antiretroviral therapy in Northeast Brazil. Most individuals harbored HIV-1 B and BF recombinants, with an overall antiretroviral resistance rate of 47%. The study highlighted the importance of surveillance of resistance mutations, with key mutations including M184V and K103N.

Summary: This study investigated factors associated with virologic failure in HIV-infected children and adolescents on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Cameroon. The results showed that adolescents and patients followed in decentralized care units were at higher risk of virologic failure, highlighting the importance of therapeutic education in resource limited countries to improve viral load suppression.

Summary: The availability of highly effective antiretroviral therapies has reduced mortality in persons living with HIV, but has led to an increase in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and other chronic illnesses. Although there has been a decline in morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease, studies continue to report higher rates of cardiovascular events among HIV patients. HIV has been identified as a risk enhancer for cardiovascular disease, but the utilization of cholesterol-lowering therapies remains low in this population. The use of statin therapy is complicated by drug-drug interactions and comorbidities associated with HIV.

Summary: This study aimed to search for the DXA-derived fat mass ratio (FMR) threshold for the diagnosis of HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS) and to identify people living with HIV (PLHIV) at high cardiovascular risk. The study found that PLHIV had higher FMR and cardio-metabolic derangement compared to uninfected controls, despite having lower BMI and fat mass index (FMI). PLHIV with HALS had a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome compared to those without HALS and controls. FMR was significantly associated with various metabolic parameters in PLHIV.

Summary: HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children showed lower neurodevelopmental scores during early childhood compared to HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU) children. Female children and those with employed mothers achieved higher scores on measures of intellectual ability and/or adaptive functioning. However, no consistent associations were found between neurodevelopmental measures and HIV/ARV specific variables within the HEU group.

Summary: This study applied predictive machine learning algorithms to HIV programmatic data from South Africa and developed models to predict patient attendance and viral load suppression. Important predictors included previous visit history, viral load testing frequency, visit time, age, and treatment duration. The results showed that machine learning can effectively identify HIV patients at risk of disengagement and unsuppressed viral load.

Summary: The study found that students living on islands were more likely to be overweight and obese compared to their mainland counterparts, and they also had lower fitness levels. Additionally, island-dwelling students had higher rates of low physical fitness and overweight/obesity. Increased general and abdominal adiposity negatively impacted students' performance in physical fitness tests.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between plant-based and animal-based protein-rich diets on successful ageing among people over 50. Participants with high plant protein consumption had higher Successful Aging Index scores, while low animal and high plant protein intake was associated with higher scores. Conversely, low animal and low plant protein intake was negatively correlated with successful ageing.

Summary: Analyzing the plasma heat capacity profile of albumin and globulins during extreme physical exercise using DSC revealed that prolonged intense exercise enhanced the thermal stability of plasma albumin, shifting its denaturation transition to higher temperatures. However, these alterations were not persistent, as virtually full recovery of the initial status was observed after a 30-day recovery period.
