Summary: The study in Rwanda assessed the prevalence of HCV infection and comorbidities among HIV patients, finding that those with HIV/HCV coinfection had a higher rate of comorbidities compared to those with HIV mono-infection, indicating the need for more interventions in this group.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genotypes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among people living with HIV (PLWH) in the Amazon region. The study found a low prevalence of HCV infection and identified the presence of HCV genotype 2 for the first time among PLWH in the area.

Summary: In HIV/HCV coinfected patients with advanced HCV-related cirrhosis, eradication of HCV following DAA therapy resulted in improved liver disease markers, decreased plasma biomarkers, and reduced gene expression related to antiviral/inflammatory responses, particularly in levels of chemokines and ISGs.

Summary: The study conducted in Yingjiang and Kaiyuan, Yunnan Province, China, with 310 HIV-1/HCV coinfected drug users, identified multiple HCV subtypes and HIV-1 subtypes, demonstrating a high consistency in the spatial dynamics of HIV-1 and HCV among coinfected individuals. This provides theoretical evidence for the simultaneous prevention of HIV-1 and HCV.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of HCV among HIV-positive individuals and identified predictors for the outcomes of HIV-HCV coinfected patients. The results showed a high prevalence of HIV-HCV coinfection in males and intravenous drug users. HCV infection was found to impact the recovery of CD4 cells in patients on HAART. Screening for HCV should be conducted in HIV patients who smoke or use intravenous drugs before starting HAART.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between plasma immune checkpoint proteins at baseline with hepatic steatosis index increase at the end of follow-up in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients. The results showed that higher levels of immune checkpoint proteins BTLA, CD137, CD80, GITR, LAG-3, and PD-L1 before HCV therapy were associated with a long-term increase in hepatic steatosis index after successful HCV therapy, suggesting a potential predictive role for early detection of progression towards steatosis in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients.

Summary: HIV/HCV-coinfected patients produce lower levels of broad-spectrum anti-HCV antibodies compared to HCV-monoinfected patients. After sustained virological response (SVR), the HCV-group has higher antibody levels than the HIV/HCV-group, but the levels decrease in both groups at 36 weeks post-SVR.

Summary: This study characterizes the plasma-derived extracellular vesicles miRNA signature of chronic HCV infected and HIV coinfected patients, revealing potential molecular mechanisms of coinfection. The study identifies differentially expressed miRNAs that regulate biological pathways related to HCV and HIV pathogenesis, which may assist in the development of new biomarkers and treatment strategies.

Summary: The study showed that after DAA treatment, individuals coinfected with HIV/HCV had similar SVR rates and risks of liver-related deaths and events compared to those infected with HCV alone, but had a higher risk of all-cause deaths, non-liver-related deaths, and non-liver-related cancers.

Summary: Coinfection of HIV and HCV significantly impacts disease progression, leading to higher viral loads and accelerated liver fibrosis progression. While DAA can cure nearly 95% of coinfected individuals, little is known about the effects on immune reconstitution and HIV reservoir.

Summary: This study found that the elimination of hepatitis C virus (HCV) using direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) did not modify the HIV reservoir and viral splicing. Additionally, individuals who spontaneously cleared HCV showed a significant decrease in the HIV reservoir, possibly due to an enhanced immune response.
