Summary: Candida albicans is a commensal fungus that can cause nosocomial infections in immunocompromised individuals. In this study, the virulence variability of different clinical isolates of C. albicans was investigated. The results showed that different isolates exhibited different abilities to evade macrophage phagocytosis and resist oxidative stress, which correlated with their mortality rates in an animal model of candidiasis. This study highlights the importance of in vitro and in vivo functional characterizations for determining the virulence of different clinical isolates.

Summary: Invasive fungal infections mainly affect specific patient groups and result in significant mortality. Challenges in current antifungal drugs include side effects and acquired resistance. The development of the humanized monoclonal antibody H5K1 shows promise in the treatment of invasive fungal infections.

Summary: Phibilin, a new antimicrobial peptide obtained from Philomycus bilineatus, effectively inhibits the growth and activities of antifungal-resistant Candida albicans. It acts as a fungicidal peptide by disrupting the membrane and interacting with the DNA of the fungi. Moreover, Phibilin induces necrosis in C. albicans via the ROS-related pathway and inhibits biofilm formation. In addition, it displays a synergistic effect with clotrimazole and shows promising results in a mouse cutaneous infection model.

Summary: This study aimed to develop anidulafungin-loaded Human Serum Albumin nanoparticles to enhance its solubility and antifungal efficacy. The results showed that the nanoparticles improved water solubility of anidulafungin, exhibited stronger antifungal effects in vitro, and prolonged survival time in a murine model of invasive candidiasis compared to the free drug. The developed nanoparticles have the potential to improve drug administration and therapeutic outcomes for fungal diseases.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiology of non-albicans Candida (NAC) infections and their resistance in Lebanese hospitals. The most common NAC species isolated were Candida glabrata (40.8%) and Candida tropicalis (23.1%). The study also found differing susceptibility to antifungal treatments among these species. Proper identification of these organisms is crucial for effective treatment.

Summary: In this study, a series of arylsulfonamide compounds were screened and the structure-activity relationship was established based on a hit compound. The antifungal activity against various Candida species was tested, and cytotoxicity was evaluated. These findings could contribute to the development of novel topical therapeutics for fungal infections.

Summary: This study developed a method using nanoparticles to modulate the deleterious inflammatory response caused by fungal infection. The results showed that β-Glc-PS nanoparticles can reduce the inflammatory response caused by C. albicans cells and decrease the production of reactive oxygen species. This provides a theoretical basis for the development of targeted therapy for fungal infections.

Summary: Fungal infections, especially those caused by Candida spp., are a significant concern in the medical community. The development of drug resistance in existing antifungal therapies highlights the need for new antifungal drugs. This study evaluated the antifungal activity and biocompatibility of silver-containing microcrystals, and developed a new three-dimensional coculture model to assess the materials' effectiveness.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Candida albicans infection may enhance the development and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma by stimulating the production of matrix metalloproteinases, oncometabolites, and protumor signaling pathways. The research also indicates that Candida colonization in the oral cavity can induce the overexpression of metastatic genes and significant changes in markers of epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

Summary: Oral Candida albicans infection is associated with the development and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Candida albicans promotes the progression of OSCC by stimulating the production of matrix metalloproteinases, oncometabolites, protumor signaling pathways, and overexpression of prognostic marker genes associated with metastatic events. Candida albicans also upregulates oncogenes in nonmalignant cells.

Summary: Intestinal commensal bacteria play a significant role in regulating the development of Th17 cells, with potential implications for autoimmune diseases. The atypical nuclear I kappa B protein I kappa B zeta may be involved in this process. Different gut commensals with varying immunogenicity levels can affect the expression of I kappa B zeta in dendritic cells and influence the immune response, indicating potential therapeutic implications for autoimmune diseases.
