Summary: The rat retrosplenial cortex (RSC) plays a critical role in learning and memory. This study provides evidence that inhibition of cells in the posterior RSC during pre-exposure to a training context reduces behavioral responding during subsequent memory tests. Inhibition of either anterior or posterior RSC during shock delivery impairs memory, and inhibiting cellular activity in the posterior RSC during memory retrieval reduces responding. These findings demonstrate the importance of the posterior RSC in memory formation, retrieval, and expression of contextual information.

However, the redundant nature of elaborative encoding may limit its effectiveness when combined with retrieval practice. Summary: This study presents a deep learning-based shape encoding framework for geospatial objects. Three different methods, namely GraphNet, SeqNet, and PixelNet, were proposed to encode planar geospatial shapes using different modeling approaches. Comparison with existing methods and traditional geometric methods shows that the deep encoder-decoder methods have advantages in computing shape features and coding, with potential applications in shape measurement and retrieval tasks.

Different study techniques can influence the accuracy of delayed judgments of learning by affecting the accessibility of cues stored in long-term memory. The accessibility of targets is positively associated with delayed-judgment accuracy and study techniques that enhance the accessibility of targets also enhance delayed-judgment accuracy.

Summary: There is an increasing consensus that retrieval practice is beneficial for improving long-term retention and reducing achievement gaps in schools. This study explored the relationship between retrieval practice and individual differences in need for cognition (NFC) using behavioral and fMRI data. Results showed that retrieval practice was effective for individuals with both high and low levels of NFC. These findings have direct implications for educational practice.

The results show that memory performance is better in the social-feedback group, although they also exhibit a strong response bias. Brain event-related potentials (ERPs) reveal stronger early negativities and late positivities in the social-feedback group. The explicit verbal-learning group shows higher amplitudes in the subsequent slow-wave, indicating reliance on strategic processes. Incidental encoding driven by context outweighs explicit instructions, highlighting the importance of social factors in memory.
