Summary: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to detect sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. The study found a fair correlation between BIA parameters and skeletal muscle index (SMI) obtained using computed tomography. The cut-off values for BIA-SMI and phase angle (PA) in the detection of sarcopenia were determined. SMM was significantly associated with outcome, indicating the potential of BIA as a fast and affordable method for detecting sarcopenia in liver cirrhosis patients.

Summary: There is a significant association between sarcopenia and increased mortality risk in patients with cirrhosis, especially in male patients, those with alcohol-associated liver disease, and those with Child-Pugh C cirrhosis. The severity and duration of sarcopenia are correlated with higher mortality rates. Raising awareness about the importance of sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis is crucial.

While CT scans are the gold standard for diagnosing sarcopenia, their use in clinical practice is limited. Therefore, there is a need for indirect methods to identify sarcopenia in cirrhotic patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association of myosteatosis with other muscle abnormalities and its role in the prognosis of liver cirrhosis (LC). Results showed that myosteatosis was positively associated with age and Child-Pugh score, and inversely associated with skeletal muscle index. Patients with myosteatosis had lower survival rate and myosteatosis emerged as a negative prognostic factor. The study suggests that myosteatosis may represent a prodromal phase of muscle degeneration before the development of sarcopenia.
