Summary: Primary care physicians in Japan and the US have similar practices and views on diagnosing dementia, but there are differences in the timing of formal diagnosis. Japanese physicians tend to wait until family members need long-term care services for a formal diagnosis, while American physicians are more proactive in screening for dementia early and promoting advance directives while patients still have decision-making capabilities.

Summary: Part-time work in the United States, both voluntary and involuntary, is associated with worse health outcomes, and the relationship is influenced by state-level social policies and contexts. The study found significant variations in self-rated health among part-time workers across different states and highlighted the need for social policies that can mitigate the negative health consequences associated with part-time work.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the applicability of federal health provider shortage areas (HPSAs) to eye care providers (ECPs). The study found a weak correlation between current HPSAs and ECP supply. A new approach was proposed to identify counties with high need but limited access to eye care.

Summary: This study estimates healthcare spending for respiratory conditions in the United States from 1996 to 2016, and identifies factors contributing to spending growth. The findings indicate high spending on respiratory conditions, particularly for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The study highlights the importance of addressing service price and intensity, especially for pharmaceuticals, in reducing healthcare spending growth.

Summary: The geographically inequitable distribution of physicians in Japan has been a serious social problem. The government addressed this issue by establishing Jichi Medical University (JMU) and regional quotas (RQs) for medical schools. JMU/RQs recruit local students, provide them with education and financial support, and assign them to rural areas for service. While these policies have proven effective, ethical concerns have been raised.

Summary: This study explores the benefits of on-site printing of spare parts in remote geographic locations with intermittent spare parts supply and fixed interval replenishment. By considering emergency supply options and modeling replenishment decisions, it is found that on-site 3D printing leads to significant operational cost savings and increased asset availability compared to expediting. These results have implications for organizations operating in remote locations, such as the mining and offshore industry.

Summary: Doctors working with asylum seekers in Germany have different views and experiences regarding the provision of medical care. They perceive asylum seekers as different from other patients, and the difference in medical settings and norms may impede appropriate care. However, understanding differences attributed to context seems to foster a more caring approach.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the trend in nonresearch payments made by the industries to infectious disease physicians in the United States since the launch of the Open Payments Database and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a decrease in the total amount of payments and the number of physicians accepting payments since the inception of the database, and a significant decrease in nonresearch payments due to the pandemic. However, there was a slight increase in payments and the number of physicians accepting payments after the onset of the pandemic.

Summary: American politicians aim to expand the economy and provide opportunities for citizens through creating economic activities. This research examines the impacts of tax and other economic variables on economic wellbeing, providing a timely update on contributing factors to economic growth. The study finds that increases in the highest statutory corporate and personal income tax rates reduce real GDP per capita, while growth in net exports of goods and services, M2 money supply, multifactor productivity and cost increase real GDP per capita.

Summary: In households with high uncertainty, consumption is likely to be reduced, credit access is available more easily, and equity market investments are less likely to be made. Economic policy uncertainty for natural resource policy is largely ignored in the existing literature. This paper explores the impacts of economic policy uncertainty on natural resources considering the roles of financial development, inflation, and economic growth in the United States from 1985 to 2020. Our result suggests that natural resource development is discouraged by economic policy uncertainty.

Agricultural Economics & Policy

Summary: In the past century, both the U.S. and Japan have experienced a significant decrease in agricultural employment despite differences in their agricultural sectors. Economic models suggest that the primary reason for this intersectoral labor migration is the difference in expected returns. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of considering real options framework and structural/institutional elements. Our analysis of the U.S. and Japan using aggregate migration equations and different labor and return differential definitions reveals inconclusive results regarding the relevance of the Marshallian trigger in migration decisions, with heterogeneity across countries and labor definitions. We argue that this heterogeneity is driven by differences in agricultural sector structures.

Summary: This study addresses the institutional and informational obstacles in understanding and mitigating road traffic injuries in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) by using geospatial analysis. The researchers developed a geocoding workflow to improve investigation of low-quality datasets in LMICs and applied it to an RTI dataset from Lagos State, Nigeria. The study highlights the implications of geospatial data analysis in LMICs on health resource allocation and patient outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated the geographic diffusion of digital mammography facilities in the contiguous United States from 2001 to 2014, and estimated the geographic accessibility to this new technology for women aged >= 45 years. The results showed that the adoption of digital mammography advanced first in densely populated regions and last in remote rural areas. Furthermore, the accessibility to digital mammography was lower for Native American women and rural residents.
