Summary: In Australia, the proportion of early mortality due to dialysis withdrawal has remained stable since 2005, with medical withdrawals consistently accounting for a higher annual proportion than psychosocial withdrawals. Risk factors associated with early mortality from psychosocial and medical withdrawals were found to be similar.

Summary: Based on the 2018 data, kidney replacement therapy is prevalent in Europe and countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, with an incidence rate of 129 per million population. Most patients choose hemodialysis at the onset of treatment, and kidney transplant recipients have a higher survival rate.

Summary: This study investigated the criterion validity and convergent validity of unweighted composite scores for physical and mental health. The results showed that these scores demonstrated satisfactory validity, suggesting that the calculation of these composite scores can be kept simple.

Summary: Acute kidney injury is a common complication in critically ill patients with high mortality rates, especially in those requiring dialysis. Different approaches to renal replacement therapy have been attempted, but their impact on reducing mortality remains inconclusive in larger studies. The challenge remains in determining the most effective use of dialysis in critically ill patients.

Summary: This study retrospectively observed the incidence, clinical characteristics, admission trends, and outcomes of hypertensive crisis in end-stage kidney disease patients on maintenance dialysis. The study found that hospitalization rates for hypertensive crisis have increased during the past decade in these patients, but mortality and readmission rates have shown improvement.

Summary: This study investigated the seroprevalence of SARS-COV2 in hemodialysis patients and caregivers after the first and second waves of COVID-19. The results showed an overall increase in seroprevalence following the second wave. Antibody levels decreased over time. The rapid serological test exhibited good performance and could be useful for future antibody monitoring.

Summary: This study collected data on renal replacement therapy (RRT) for end-stage renal disease from European and Mediterranean countries. It analyzed the incidence and prevalence of RRT, kidney transplantation activity, and survival probabilities. The study also compared different age categories and found significant differences.

Summary: The study found that COVID-19 patients with AKI had a higher risk of death, but good kidney function recovery among survivors. However, some patients still needed dialysis at discharge.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to explore the relationship between physical functional performance and all-cause mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing dialysis. The results showed that poor physical functional performance was significantly associated with higher all-cause mortality in these patients.

Summary: This study compares the life expectancy of patients who underwent kidney transplantation (KT) versus patients awaiting KT on dialysis. The results suggest that KT is beneficial in terms of life expectancy for patients with a BMI between 30 and 35 kg/m(2). However, for patients with a BMI >= 35 kg/m(2), KT may be questionable and needs to be taken into consideration in organ allocation systems.

Summary: Identifying modifiable predictors of outcomes for acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis is important for better care of patients. This study found that dialysis-related factors, such as frequency of intradialytic hypotension and net ultrafiltration, are associated with the outcomes of recovery, end stage kidney disease, or death. Optimizing dialysis prescription and close monitoring of outpatient dialysis are crucial in improving outcomes for these patients.

Summary: Frailty is common in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with adverse outcomes, including mortality and risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Preventative interventions should be initiated to mitigate the development of frailty. The use of a simple frailty index, generated electronically from health records, can predict outcomes and may aid prioritization for management of people with frailty.

Summary: This study found that dietary potassium intake was not independently associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Initially, unadjusted analyses showed that patients with lower dietary potassium intake had higher mortality rates. However, after adjusting for demographic and laboratory data, this association weakened and even disappeared.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between incremental initiation of peritoneal dialysis and mortality. The study found that patients in the incremental group had better survival and cardiovascular event-free survival during the first 6 years of dialysis compared to the full dose group. However, this advantage disappeared as dialysis vintage became longer. Additionally, the incremental group had lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality rates compared to the full dose group.
