Private insurers pay widely varying prices for inpatient care across hospitals. Previous research indicates that certain hospitals use market clout to obtain higher payment rates, but there have been few in-depth examinations of the relationship between hospital characteristics and pricing power. This study used private insurance claims data to identify hospitals receiving inpatient prices significantly higher or lower than the median in their market. High-price hospitals, compared to other hospitals, tend to be larger; be major teaching hospitals; belong to systems with large market shares; and provide specialized services, such as heart transplants and Level I trauma care. High-price hospitals also receive significant revenues from nonpatient sources, such as state Medicaid disproportionate-share hospital funds, and they enjoy healthy total financial margins. Quality indicators for high-price hospitals were mixed: High-price hospitals fared much better than low-price hospitals did in U. S. News & World Report rankings, which are largely based on reputation, while generally scoring worse on objective measures of quality, such as postsurgical mortality rates. Thus, insurers may face resistance if they attempt to steer patients away from high-price hospitals because these facilities have good reputations and offer specialized services that may be unique in their markets.

Using Purely Sinusoidal Voltammetry for Rapid Inference of Surface-Confined Electrochemical Reaction Parameters

Henry O. Lloyd-Laney, Nicholas D. J. Yates, Martin J. Robinson, Alice R. Hewson, Jack D. Firth, Darrell M. Elton, Jie Zhang, Alan M. Bond, Alison Parkin, David J. Gavaghan

Summary: AC voltammetric techniques, particularly PSV, are powerful for studying redox reactions of surface-confined ferrocene derivatives. By conducting PSV experiments, key chemical and physical parameters can be recovered quickly compared to other AC voltammetric techniques. Bayesian inference and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods can be used to visualize and quantify the confidence, distribution, and degree of correlation of the recovered parameters.

A Comparison of Bayesian Inference Strategies for Parameterisation of Large Amplitude AC Voltammetry Derived from Total Current and Fourier Transformed Versions

Luke Gundry, Gareth Kennedy, Jonathan Keith, Martin Robinson, David Gavaghan, Alan M. Bond, Jie Zhang

Summary: In this study, a computer program was developed using mathematical optimization and Bayesian inference algorithms to parameterize large amplitude AC voltammetric data for quantifying parameters and uncertainties in complex electrochemical reactions. The harmonic based Bayesian inference methods outperformed other methods in parameterizing the thermodynamics and electrode kinetics of the close to reversible processes. The study confirmed the robustness of the objective functions and validated the Bayesian inference methods using noisy synthetic and experimental data.

Summary: A series of hybrid electrolytes composed of diglyme and ionic liquids have been investigated for Na-O-2 batteries. Different chemical compositions of the ILs affect the size, purity, and distribution of the discharge products. By controlling the physicochemical properties of the electrolyte and the speciation of Na+ and superoxide radical anion, the nucleation and growth phenomena, as well as electrolyte stability, can be optimized to improve battery performance.

Venkata Sai Sriram Mosali, Linbo Li, Graeme Puxty, Michael D. Horne, Alan M. Bond, Jie Zhang

Summary: In this study, ultrathin Pd nanosheets with a (111) exposed facet were synthesized for CO evolution in a CO2 saturated KHCO3 solution. Cu was introduced into the Pd nanosheets to form CuxPdy alloy nanosheets with (111) exposed planes, which showed competitive CO evolution compared with pure Pd nanosheets. The composition of the CuxPdy alloy played a significant role in determining the nanosheet structure and the product selectivity.

Revisiting the TCNQF40/1-/2- Catalysis Mechanism for the [Fe(CN)6]3-/4--S2O32-/S4O62- Redox Reaction

Anbrah E. Alzubidi, Alan M. Bond, Lisandra L. Martin

Summary: Published data suggests that sparingly soluble metal complexes of TCNQF1-n, where n=0, 1, 2, 4, can act as heterogeneous catalysts for the slow [Fe(CN)6]3- =4- -S2O2-3/S4O2-6 reaction in water. However, this study shows that the coordination polymer CuTCNQF4 can participate as a homogeneous catalyst through a small concentration of dissolved TCNQF1-4. UV-visible spectrophotometry was used to study the catalysis of the redox reaction in the presence of various catalysts. The findings suggest the need to reevaluate the mechanism of catalysis by TCNQF4 based solids.

Fluorine Substitution of TCNQ Alters the Redox-Driven Catalytic Pathway for the Ferricyanide-Thiosulfate Reaction

Anbrah E. Alzubidi, Alan M. Bond, Lisandra L. Martin

Summary: Mechanistic variation in catalysis through substituent-based redox tuning is well established. Fluorination of TCNQ provides a significant variation in the redox potentials of the TCNQF(n)(0/1-) and TCNQF(n)(1/2-) processes. The catalysis of the ferrocyanide-thiosulfate redox reaction in aqueous solution occurs via different mechanisms depending on the presence of fluorinated or non-fluorinated catalysts. Thermodynamic data explain the observed differences in the catalytic mechanisms for the two systems. CuTCNQF(n) coordination polymers, previously considered as insoluble and heterogeneous catalysts, are shown to act as homogeneous catalysts in the ferricyanide-thiosulfate reaction.
