Summary: Supraglottic laryngectomy has undergone advancements from open to transoral endoscopic approaches, particularly with the use of lasers, endoscopes, ultrasonic devices, and robotics. Transoral laser-assisted microsurgery has emerged as an effective alternative to partial laryngectomy or non-surgical therapies, providing faster functional recovery. A new technique called transoral laser-assisted infrahyoid supraglottic laryngectomy allows for tumor removal while preserving crucial structures, resulting in optimal preservation of laryngopharyngeal function and minimal complications.

Summary: This study compared the swallowing outcomes of endoscopic supraglottic laryngectomy (ESL) and open partial horizontal laryngectomy type I (OPHL I). The results showed that ESL had fewer cases of laryngeal penetration and aspiration at 3 months post-op, but there were no statistically significant differences between the two surgeries in terms of laryngeal penetration and aspiration at 12 months post-op. This suggests that successful outcomes depend on careful patient selection and the surgeon's experience.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term functional and oncologic outcomes of transoral robotic supraglottic laryngectomy (TORS-SGL). The results showed that TORS-SGL has excellent functional results for T1, T2, and selected T3 supraglottic tumors, and provides acceptable long-term oncologic results compared to alternative treatment modalities.

Summary: The worldwide incidence rate of laryngeal cancer is decreasing, but the 5-year survival rate has decreased from 66% to 63% in recent years. The study evaluated the survival rate of patients with laryngeal cancer according to the disease stage and treatment method. The results showed that patients who underwent surgical treatment had a higher chance of survival than those treated with chemoradiotherapy.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the oncologic outcomes of open partial laryngectomy (OPL) in untreated pT3 laryngeal cancer and compare them with total laryngectomy (TL). A total of 805 patients who underwent OPL were included, and the 5-year overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), disease-free survival (DFS), and locoregional recurrence-free survival (LFS) rates were calculated. The analysis also compared TL and OPL, showing no significant differences in survival and disease control rates. Therefore, accurate patient selection is crucial when choosing the surgical approach.

Summary: In the current version of TNM (AJCC 8th edition), IHC is recommended for HPV detection in oropharyngeal squamocellular carcinoma. However, its reliability and applicability in different populations, especially in de-intensification protocols, are debatable. This paper discusses its limits and suggests possible actions to overcome these limitations.

Summary: This study aims to define the current standard of care for nasal vestibule squamous cell carcinoma (NVSCC). Through reviewing recent acquisitions, it is found that the current staging system is inadequate. Current evidence suggests that brachytherapy is at least equivalent to surgery and superior to external beams in terms of oncological outcomes, and superior to both modalities in terms of cosmesis and function for the treatment of primary lesions without bone invasion.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the staging systems for cancer of the nasal vestibule. The distribution of stages varied widely among the four evaluated systems, with the classification proposed by Bussu et al. showing the most balanced allocation of patients. The widespread adoption of a single system and the introduction of a designated topography code could improve data reporting and understanding of the disease. Further analysis is needed to determine the best classification system for nasal vestibule carcinoma.

Summary: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a crucial role in the central nervous system and sensory structures such as olfactory and auditory systems. It has been shown to have protective effects, promoting neuronal growth and survival, and modulating synaptic plasticity. However, conflicting data exist on BDNF expression and functions in the cochlear and olfactory structures. Studies suggest that BDNF levels may serve as a biomarker in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, hearing loss, and olfactory impairment. This review summarizes current research on BDNF in the brain and sensory domains, highlighting the potential of BDNF as a biomarker for early diagnosis and therapeutic target.

Summary: Integrational radiotherapy is an effective treatment for early stages nasal vestibule tumors, with high local control rates and low toxicity profiles. This study proposes novel strategies to reduce dose to organs at risk, including the use of metal shields for the eyes and the use of mouth swabs to push away the mandible. The results show statistically significant dose reduction for both strategies.

Summary: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) has a significant impact on quality of life, and defining disease control is important for determining the best treatment strategy. However, disease control is not standardized, and a universally accepted tool is still missing. A nationwide survey of otorhinolaryngologists in Italy revealed that while international guidelines were known, their implementation was challenging. Clinical symptoms, particularly nasal obstruction, loss of sense of smell, and rhinorrhea, were considered important indicators of disease control.

Summary: This study found a link between early sensorineural hearing loss and mild cognitive impairment, as well as their association with potential risk factors. Screening for hearing loss and cognitive impairment can help prevent the progression to dementia.
