Poster summary

Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic, progressive, crippling disorder closely associated with areca nut chewing and characterized by fibro-elastic change leading to restricted mouth opening. Various medical management tried in the management of oral submucous fibrosis. One such management is Iontophoresis. Iontophoresis is the topical application of an ionized substance through soft tissue by the application of continuous direct electric current. Iontophoresis of dexamethasone sodium phosphate is used in the management of oral submucous fibrosis. The objective of this review is to evaluate iontophoresis in the management of oral submucous fibrosis. Intralesional injection of Dexamethasone sodium phosphate or hyaluronidase can cause patient discomfort. The short duration of topical co-iontophoresis of Dexamethasone sodium phosphate or other therapeutics to the mucosa increases local bioavailability and presents a patient-friendly treatment for the management of oral submucous fibrosis.
