Poster summary

Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is one of the common cancers in the world, accounting for approximately 5% of all malignant tumors. Primary tumor of maxilla, however, is relatively rare and accounts for only 0.5–5% of oral cancers. Majority of malignancy originate from the oral or nasal mucosa and secondarily invade the underlying bone, some proportion from odontogenic epithelial remnants within the alveolus. Differentiating common benign bone lesions, necrotic bone due to infection and neoplastic bone due to malignancy through clinical and radiographic examination is a challenge. Therefore, it is imperative that biopsy of the bone lesions be carried out to insure definite diagnosis and treatment planning. We herein report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the anterior maxillary alveolus with clinical, radiographic and histopathological features and its consummate surgical management and radiotherapy. Follow ups are of the utmost important as recurrence rates are high.
