This should be the last time submitting to FMS, objectively evaluating this journal.
Because marine science is a niche field, and ecology is even more niche, there are not many journals to choose from. Therefore, from top academicians to small laboratories, in recent years, we have mostly been submitting to open access (OA) journals. This has led to a rise in OA impact factors. To my knowledge, among the well-established journals, only L&O Letters has an impact factor over 5. This includes widely recognized journals like PO, L&O, JO, AGU, ECOSYSTEMS, all of which have been surpassed by Frontiers this year. Among OA journals, major laboratories tend to prefer Water Resources Research, while smaller laboratories tend to prefer journals from MDPI (such as Water and Journal of Marine Science and Engineering). As for the old water journals from before the OA era, such as Deep Sea Research, they seem to have been abandoned both domestically and internationally.
However, if one wants to establish a reputation in the industry, they still need representative works that can be showcased. They should not simply focus on high impact factors. Therefore, my personal ranking is as follows: first, Nature Series (NS), followed by Nature Communications (NC), Science Advances (SA), PNAS or Water Resources (WR), then the top journal in the industry, like L&O, followed by good journals like PO, and then better OA journals like Frontiers and general non-OA journals, and finally journals from MDPI.
Nevertheless, I am grateful to Frontiers. As a beginner and novice-friendly journal, it has been quite accommodating!

Some people say that the journal is mediocre, but I don't feel that way. The publication of the article shows that the reviewers and academic editors cannot afford to handle it casually. The experience of submitting to a traditional journal is much better in terms of at least not wasting time and emotions, as traditional journal reviewers often wait until the last minute to handle it.

After the boss found out that it was popular, he promoted us to submit our papers to meet the quantity requirement. However, for papers with slightly better quality, the boss first submits them to mainstream journals such as JGR, CD, JPO, OM, PO, etc. If they get rejected, then he submits them to industry journals like ECSS, OD, JO, AOS, and finally FMS. The main issue is that the quality of the papers in FMS varies greatly, there are some good articles, but most of them are mediocre. If it's for the sake of graduation, it's quite suitable to publish in this journal. However, if pursuing a career in scientific research, it's better not to publish unless necessary, it's even better to publish in journals like AOS, JOL, etc., because when applying for grants in the future, having too many publications in FMS might not be beneficial.
