Aims and Scope

The focus of Transportation Research: Part C is high-quality, scholarly research that addresses development, applications, and implications, in the field of transportation, of emerging technologies from such fields as operations research, computer science, electronics, control systems, artificial intelligence, and telecommunications, among others. The interest is not in the individual technologies or methodologies per se, but in their ultimate implications for the planning, design, operation, control, management, maintenance and rehabilitation of transportation systems, services and components.

Of particular interest are the impacts of emerging technologies on transportation system performance, in terms of level of service, capacity, safety, reliability, resource consumption and the environment, economics and finance, privacy, standards, and liability. Submissions in the following areas of transportation are encouraged by Part C: the impact of emerging technologies for all modes and for intermodal transportation; intelligent transportation systems; real-time operations; logistics; resource management; consumer/traveler adoption, acceptance and usage of new technologies; infrastructure applications of emerging technologies.

Compared to the "big shots" in the industry who are stuck in their models and methodologies from two or three decades ago, just circling around and indulging themselves, taking the latest applications in the industry to imagine and fit them into existing model scenarios, creating a bunch of seemingly true but actually false propositions and algorithms, and then publishing in a so-called "top-tier journal", this kind of watering down using methods from other fields is slightly more clever, at least injecting some new technological ideas into this field (although it cannot be considered as first-class research). Honestly speaking, in the recent years, in the field of intelligent transportation, whether it is connected vehicles, electric vehicles, ride-hailing services, or autonomous driving, how much contribution has been made by traditional "transportation experts" leading the way? An applied discipline that does not focus on technological development and industrial revolution, but just revolves around a few outdated routines, I believe this field will eventually face the fate of being revolutionized.

The impact factor is artificially high, and there is an excessive pursuit of the so-called emerging technology. Too many papers on machine learning have been published, but they have made very little theoretical contribution to the field of transportation. The increase in impact factor is immediate, but the quality of the articles varies greatly.

The quality of papers in traditional fields is not as good as those in TRB and TRE, and the quality of papers in intelligent transportation is not as good as ITS.

The new editor-in-chief is a disciple of Daganzo, and it is hoped that there will be improvements in the positioning of the journal and the quality of peer review.
