Description:
This research critically examined the attitude, knowledge and practice of abortion and contraception among female Nigerian tertiary institution students using Federal Polytechnic, Nekede as a case study. A primary data was collected using a multiple- choice structured questionnaire administered to three hundred and eighty-five (385) respondents. Descriptive statistics of the data was obtained and Chi square test of independence were used to analyze the data. The study shows that although a significant proportion of students resort to abortion to solve their problem of unwanted pregnancy, liberalized abortion was opposed by a majority (82.3%). Although majority of the students are sexually active, the knowledge of contraception is very low and that explained the reason for the increasing rate of abortion among them. It was also discovered that students’ attitudes towards the practice of sex, abortion and the use of contraceptives is independent on their age and relationship status. Nigerian adolescents generally have low levels of contraceptive use, but their reliance on unsafe abortion is high, and results in many abortion-related complications. From the findings, it can be concluded that students’ attitudes towards abortion and contraceptive usage are not influenced by their age, sex and relationship status. It is recommended that abstinence from sex is indeed the best way of preventing abortion. However, government should review the laws that forbade abortion in the country.

Journal: African Scholar Journal of Education Research and Library Practice
Description:
This study examined the issues of unmarried cohabitation among higher institution students in Nigeria. Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State was used as a case study. The study aimed at determining incidence of cohabitation, the demographic predictors of cohabitation among the students, the factors responsible for cohabitation among the students, the attitude of students towards cohabitation among the students as well as the effects of cohabitation on academic performances of the students. A structured questionnaire was administered for the purpose of data collection. A sample of five hundred (500) students was randomly selected from the six schools/faculties of the institution. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with the aid of SPSS. The study revealed that cohabitation among student is persistently high, cohabitation is common among ND2 and HND1 students; female students were more open to talk about their cohabitation status. Reasons students cohabit include lack of finances, accommodation challenges, peer influence, sexual satisfaction and intimacy. The study concluded that there is a decline in the academic performance of students while cohabiting. Students are also aware of the dangers of cohabitation and are intentional about it.

Analysis of the Effect of Five Antimalarial Drugs on Selected Malaria Patients
Authors: Samuel U. Enogwe, Anthony O. Nkwazema and Samuel O. Adeyemo
Journal: Journal of Xidian University
Description:
This study analyses the effects of antimalarial drugs (Lonart, Quinine, Artesunate, Coartem and P-Alaxin) for the treatment of malaria patients in Owerri metropolis, Imo State, Nigeria. The study utilized data on time it takes (in hours) for each of the antimalarial drugs to cure Plasmodium falciparum malaria and the data were collected from Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. One-Way Analysis of Variance (Completely Randomized Design) and Direct Bioassay methods were employed in the analysis of data. The results of the one-way analysis of variance revealed that the five antimalarial drugs have significant effect in the treatment of uncomplicated malaria among patients between 35 and 50 years. Further, it was observed that the pair of drugs (Artesunate and Lonart), (Artesunate and Quinine) and (Artesunate and Coartem) have different effects in the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria whereas other pair of drugs compared have the same effects in the treatment of malaria. The estimates of drug effects revealed that Lonart, Quinine and Coartem were very effective in the treatment of P.falciparum malaria but they had serious negative side effects on the patients. Fortunately, Artesunate and Quinine showed positive side effects. On the other hand, the results of the bioassay revealed that the drugs under consideration are effective and suitable for use in treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Based on the findings of this study, we conclude that Artesunate and Quinine are better in the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria than Lonart, Coartem and P-Alaxin).

Journal: International Journal of Probability and Statistics
Description:
This study examines the use of other probability models as alternative for modeling wind speed data. The 2-parameter Weibull distribution is usually taken as the conventional model for fitting and analyzing wind speed observations. However, within the vanguard of statistical modeling, there exist other probability models which can also serve this purpose. In this paper, a study on ten probability models which can be used to fit wind speed observation is carried out. The models include: the Weibull, normal, Cauchy, gamma, power Lindley, generalized Lindley, generalized Rayleigh, generalized Maxwell, lognormal and the generalized exponential distributions. All ten models were used to fit monthly average wind speed observations from South-East Nigeria for the period (1987 – 2019). Results from the analysis showed that while the Weibull model remains a dominant model for the wind regime, the power Lindley and the normal distributions offered a very suitable alternative as well, as they offered very good fits to the wind speed observation which are indicative by their respective AIC, K-S and P-values.

Journal: Journal of Pure and Applied Science.
Description:
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and trend of maternal mortality rate. The data used was obtained from WHO/UNESCO BULLETIN 2018 and was analyzed using prevalence rate and trend analysis. The findings revealed that AIDS was 39% in 2012, hemorrhage 16% in 2012, anemia 47% in 2015, infection 16% in 2015, tuberculosis 16% in 2017, malaria 35% in 2001, hepatitis 15% in 2018, STI 22% in 2018, abortion 21% in 2004, and sepsis 26% in 2018. The trend of maternal mortality have an upward and downward movement, it increased in 2001, 2011, and 2018.

Analysis of Competitive Equilibrium in an Infinite Dimensional Commodity Space

Journal: West African Journal of Industrial and Academic Research
Description:
This paper considered the cost of allocated goods and attaining maximal utility with such price in the finite dimensional commodity space and observed that there exist an equilibrium price. It goes further to establish that in an infinite dimensional commodity space with subsets as consumption and production set there exist a price system. The compactness and convexity properties of these two disjoint sets enables us to establish this price system in this infinite dimensional space via the existence of set of continuous linear functional. This price system becomes the competitive equilibrium price and allocation which maximizes and minimizes the cost function for producers and consumers respectively

Journal: West African Journal of Industrial and Academic Research.
Description:
This paper aimed among other things to examine determinants of stock price movement or variations as well to x-ray different approaches to forecasting stock price. The dynamic relationships between the stock price movement and the macroeconomic variables were reviewed. This problem of predicting direction of movement of stock and stock price index was addressed.
