Rotenone, azadirachtin, pyrethrins and copper fungicide decay curves were determined in olives and olive oil samples after experimental trials, consisting of one, two and three applications of each active ingredient, were carried out twice in 2005 and 2006. Rotenone, azadiracthin and pyrethrins were analyzed by extraction with acetonitrile and determined by liquid chromatography; copper was extracted into aqueous HCl and determined by chemical stripping. Pyrethrins were always found but in levels below the acceptable limits, whereas rotenone and copper residues always exceeded, after the pre-harvest interval, the maximum threshold allowed for olives. As regards residues in olive oil, rotenone was found in concentrations higher than those detected in olives. Copper accumulated in olives according to the number of applications, whereas, in oil, the residue was always lower than the maximum residue limit. The sensitivity of the method applied did not allow detection of azadirachtin.

Tarek Ben Hassen, Hamid El Bilali, Mohammad S. Allahyari, Laurence Charbel

Summary: This study found that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought various impacts on food consumption and behaviors in Lebanon, including a shift towards healthier diets, an increase in consumption of domestic products, changes in grocery shopping behaviors (including a rise in online shopping), a surge in food stockpiling, and a decrease in household food wastage. Surprisingly, these changes seem to lead to more sustainable and healthier consumption patterns in Lebanon.

Biodiversity-pastoralism nexus in West Africa

Hamid El Bilali, Lawali Dambo, Jacques Nanema, Imael Henri Nestor Bassole, Generosa Calabrese

Summary: Biodiversity loss is a pressing challenge, particularly in regions with high ecosystem pressure such as the Sahel region. This systematic review examines the relationship between pastoralism and biodiversity in West Africa. The review finds that pastoralism has a negative impact on plant diversity, animal diversity, and ecosystem diversity in West Africa. However, the effects of pastoralism are complex and context-specific, depending on factors such as grazing intensity and livestock species. The review highlights the need for further multi-country, comparative studies to better understand the interactions and potential conflicts between different pastoralism-related land uses and biodiversity conservation in West Africa.

Summary: When an alien species invades a new habitat, biological control agents that are co-evolved with the exotic pest may be the best solution. In Italy, Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus mitsukurii are considered as biocontrol agents against Halyomorpha halys. The study found that these two parasitoids exhibit different preferences for cues between two stinkbugs.

Household food wastage in Montenegro: exploring consumer food behaviour and attitude under COVID-19 pandemic circumstances

Zeljko Vasko, Sinisa Berjan, Hamid El Bilali, Mohammad Sadegh Allahyari, Aleksandra Despotovic, Dajana Vukojevic, Adriana Radosavac

Summary: This research aimed to investigate the behavior and attitudes of food consumers in Montenegro towards food consumption and household food waste. The findings revealed that consumers in Montenegro are responsible in their food usage, with a small amount of food being wasted in terms of quantity and value. Montenegrin households still follow a traditional way of life, preparing and consuming food at home and utilizing leftovers. Consumers have confusing perceptions regarding the date labels of industrially processed foods. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in the frequency of food purchases for some consumers, but it also led to an increase in food waste.

Food Security Challenges in Europe in the Context of the Prolonged Russian-Ukrainian Conflict

Mohammad Fazle Rabbi, Tarek Ben Hassen, Hamid El Bilali, Dele Raheem, Antonio Raposo

Summary: The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has severe socio-economic consequences on the global food system and European food system. While food supply in Europe is not at risk, the conflict may impact food access and production costs, potentially driving up food prices and affecting food affordability and access. To safeguard food security, measures such as increasing food aid, ensuring stable fertilizer supply, imposing an energy price cap, initiating a farmer support package, and switching to renewable energy sources for cultivation should be taken.
