Galectins are a family of P-galactoside binding lectins, homological by a sequence of the carbobydrate-binding site. In this review literature data about structure and carbohydrate specificity of galectins are discussed. The role of galectins in the regulation of cell adhesion in immune response, inflammation, and cancer progression is considered.

40 years of glyco-polyacrylamide in glycobiology

Summary: Polyacrylamide conjugates of glycans are widely used in glycobiology for immobilizing glycans and as multivalent inhibitors. The biotin tag allows quantitative immobilization on any surface and acts as a tracer for detecting carbohydrate-binding proteins. Additionally, this review covers less common but significant applications, as well as details on the glycopolymers themselves and their interactions with proteins.

Specificity profile of αGal antibodies in αGalT KO mice as probed with comprehensive printed glycan array: Comparison with human anti-Galili antibodies

Summary: The study compared the specificity of alpha-Gal antibodies in mice and humans, finding that the mouse model recognizes a broader range of human blood group B epitopes and glycans without the alpha-galactosyl residue compared to human antibodies, which show a preference for binding bacterial polysaccharides. This suggests caution should be exercised in using the mouse model in xenotransplantation experiments when epitope specificity is critical.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using SARS-CoV-2 peptide Kode Technology-modified red cells to develop an assay for detecting SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. The results showed that C19-kodecytes have high specificity and sensitivity on routine serologic platforms, making them suitable for serological testing related to COVID-19.

Low Levels of Natural Anti-α-N-Acetylgalactosamine (Tn) Antibodies Are Associated With COVID-19

Summary: The study reveals that COVID-19 patients have significantly lower levels of anti-Tn antibodies compared to non-infected individuals, indicating both quantitative and qualitative differences. The anti-Tn antibodies are correlated with the development of specific antiviral response and are also lower in individuals with blood types A and B.

Repertoire of glycan-binding placenta-associated antibodies in healthy pregnancy and in pre-eclampsia

Summary: A possible mechanism of immune tolerance in pregnancy is the production of blocking antibodies in the placenta, which protect the fetus from the mother's immune system. The specificity and nature of these antibodies are still unknown. However, the study found that the repertoire of placental antibodies is less variable and qualitatively different from those in the peripheral blood, and this repertoire is narrower in women with pre-eclampsia compared to healthy pregnancy. Some antibodies are found exclusively in the placenta, while others are only found in the placenta of healthy women.
