Long-Term Rock Phosphate Fertilization Impacts the Microbial Communities of Maize Rhizosphere

Phosphate fertilization is a common practice in agriculture worldwide, and several commercial products are widely used. Triple superphosphate (TSP) is an excellent soluble phosphorus (P) source. However, its high cost of production makes the longterm use of crude rock phosphate (RP) a more attractive alternative in developing countries, albeit its influence on plant-associated microbiota remains unclear. Here, we compared long-term effects of TSP and RP fertilization on the structure of maize rhizosphere microbial community using next generation sequencing. Proteobacteria were dominant in all conditions, whereas Oxalobacteraceae (mainly Massilia and Herbaspirillum) was enriched in the RP-amended soil. Klebsiella was the second most abundant taxon in the RP-treated soil. Burkholderia sp. and Bacillus sp. were enriched in the RP-amended soil when compared to the TSP-treated soil. Regarding fungi, Glomeromycota showed highest abundance in RP-amended soils, and the main genera were Scutellospora and Racocetra. These taxa are already described as important for P solubilization/acquisition in RP-fertilized soil. Maize grown on TSP and RP-treated soil presented similar productivity, and a positive correlation was detected for P content and the microbial community of the soils. The results suggest changes of the microbial community composition associated to the type of phosphate fertilization. Whilst it is not possible to establish causality relations, our data highlights a few candidate taxa that could be involved in RP solubilization and plant growth promotion. Moreover, this can represent a shorter path for further studies aiming the isolation and validation of the taxa described here concerning P release on the soil plant system and their use as bioinoculants.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial dynamics of kefir production using high-throughput DNA sequencing. The results showed heterogeneity in diversity and abundance distributions between milk kefir samples. The prevalent bacterial phyla were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria, with Lactococcus as the prevalent bacterial genus, while Ascomycota was the main fungal phylum.

Summary: Rock phosphate is a natural source of phosphorus for agriculture, but its slow release can limit short-term availability to crops. P-solubilizing microorganisms were studied for their ability to improve P availability from rock phosphate. Genomic analysis of selected bacteria revealed genes related to P uptake and metabolism, showing potential for use as bioinoculants to improve rock phosphate solubilization and plant growth under field conditions.

Summary: Our study revealed significant differences in weight, height, BMI, and serum lipid levels between hypercholesterolemic individuals and controls. LEfSe analysis identified differentially abundant prokaryotic taxa in the two groups. Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States 2 (PICRUSt2) showed different predominant metabolic pathways between the two groups.

Exploring the mycobiota of bromeliads phytotelmata in Brazilian Campos Rupestres

Summary: The phytotelmata is a water-filled tank on a terrestrial plant and plays a crucial role in bromeliad growth and ecosystem functioning. However, the fungal community in this aquatic ecosystem is still poorly understood. This study used deep sequencing to analyze the fungal communities in the phytotelmata of two bromeliads species in Brazil. The results showed that each bromeliad harbors a distinct fungal community, possibly influenced by the physicochemical characteristics of the phytotelmata and plant morphological features.

Effects of 5-year experimental warming in the Alpine belt on soil Archaea: Multi-omics approaches and prospects

Summary: We studied the response of soil archaeal communities to climate change in Alpine areas and found that warming led to an increase in the abundance of Archaea in snowbeds. This increase was negatively correlated with fungal abundance and micronutrient levels, but positively correlated with soil water content. We also observed an enrichment of certain functions in the transcripts of soil archaea in response to warming. Our findings provide valuable insights into the potential changes in composition and function of soil archaea under climate change.

Composition and functioning of the soil microbiome in the highest altitudes of the Italian Alps and potential effects of climate change

Summary: Climate warming in the European Alps can lead to alpine shrub encroachment, which may affect the composition and functional potential of soil microbial species. This study found differences in the functional potential and gene expression of soil microbiomes among vegetation types. Microbial alpha-diversity increased with altitude. Shrub encroachment could lead to a loss of alpine soil species, and accelerate recalcitrant carbon decomposition, resulting in increased CO2 efflux to the atmosphere. Five years of warming had no immediate effects on microbial communities, indicating the need for longer-term studies.
