BACKGROUND: The presence of sulfur in oils causes losses in the refining process andoccasions the emission of toxic gases during fuel combustion. Biodesulfurization (BDS) is a bioprocess where some bacteria selectively remove sulfur from heterocyclic compounds. However, there are some limitations to BDS industrial application such as the high costs of the nutritional medium compounds. Previous studies with Rhodococcus erythropolis ATCC 4277 strain showed that the carbon and nitrogen concentration in culture medium significantly affected heavy gas oil (HGO) desulfurization. The aim of this present work was to optimize the nutritional medium in order to reduce the costs associated with medium formulation. The replacement of a synthetic medium by waste (cassava waste) and by products (trub) was also evaluated. RESULTS: Rhodococcus erythropolis ATCC 4277 desulfurization capacity was improved by diminishing carbon source concentration from the synthetic nutritional medium. Both trub and cassava waste led to a high desulfurization rate. About 70% of sulfur compounds were removed to the three media tested, achieving a maximum desulfurization rate of 5.0x10(3) mg sulphur kg(-1) HGO h(-1). CONCLUSION: The use of an optimized nutritional medium, cassava wastewater and trub can provide an improved methodology for BDS making potential applications in industry feasible. Activity and stability of lipase from Candida Antarctica after treatment in pressurized fluids

Mirian Cristina Feiten, Iasmin Morigi, Marco Di Luccio, Jose Vladimir Oliveira

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the treatment of Candida antarctica Lipase B (CalB) in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as well as its activity after high-pressure treatment. The results showed that CalB treated with SC-CO2 at 35 ℃, 75 bar for 1 hour and LPG at 65 ℃, 30 bar for 1 hour had residual specific hydrolytic activities of 132% and 142%, respectively. The enzyme treated at high pressure still maintained an activity above 100% after 20 days of storage at low temperatures. There was no significant difference in the residual activity loss of CalB treated with LPG and stored at different temperatures over time. However, a greater difference was observed between CalB treated with CO2 and flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen (-196 ℃) followed by storage in a freezer (-10 ℃) compared to CalB stored in a freezer at -10 ℃. These findings suggest the need for further studies on CalB and other enzymes under different pressurized fluids for industrial applications.

Cassava wastewater valorization for the production of biosurfactants: surfactin, rhamnolipids, and mannosileritritol lipids

Vanessa Kristine de Oliveira Schmidt, Grazielly Maria Didier de Vasconscelos, Renata Vicente, Jackelyne de Souza Carvalho, Isabela Karina Della-Flora, Lucas Degang, Debora de Oliveira, Cristiano Jose de Andrade

Summary: The global production of cassava is approximately 303 million tons, which results in the generation of 0.65 kg of solid residue and 25.3 l of wastewater per kg of processed cassava root. The composition of the wastewater varies depending on its source, with cassava flour production exhibiting higher levels of organic load and total cyanide compared to starch processing. The presence of cyanide in cassava residues poses a toxicity risk to humans and animals. Developing eco-friendly methods for the treatment or reuse of cassava wastewater is a promising yet challenging endeavor. This study aims to explore the production of biosurfactants using cassava wastewater as an alternative culture medium.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of a multi-stage block freeze concentration (BFC) on the physicochemical properties of Morinda citrifolia leaf extract. The results showed that the BFC process resulted in significantly higher concentrations of phenolic compounds and increased antioxidant activity. The findings suggest that this non-thermal, sustainable, and low-cost processing method can produce concentrated fractions with potential applications in functional food development from agroindustrial wastes.

Using Raw Accelerometer Data to Predict High-Impact Mechanical Loading

Lucas Veras, Florencio Diniz-Sousa, Giorjines Boppre, Vitor Devezas, Hugo Santos-Sousa, John Preto, Joao Paulo Vilas-Boas, Leandro Machado, Jose Oliveira, Helder Fonseca

Summary: The purpose of this study was to develop prediction equations for peak ground reaction force (pGRF) and peak loading rate (pLR) in high-impact activities for adults with various body masses. Regression equations were developed using accelerometry data, with body mass and peak acceleration or acceleration rate as predictors. The equations had high accuracy for predicting pGRF, with a coefficient of determination (R-2) of at least 0.83 and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) below 14.5%. However, the accuracy of the pLR prediction equations was lower than that of the pGRF equations.

Current status, gaps and challenges of rendering industries wastewater

Felipe Matheus Muller, Debora de Oliveira, Camila Michels

Summary: The consumption of products of animal origin (PAO) has increased significantly in the past 50 years, leading to a rise in the generation of animal by-products' residues during processing. The rendering industry is the main method for adding value to these residues, resulting in a greater amount of raw material and the generation of gaseous effluents and wastewater. However, there is currently a lack of literature on rendering wastewater treatments and valorisation processes.

Lipase-catalyzed Production of Sugar Esters in Pressurized Fluid Media: A Review

Eulalia L. S. Barros, Evertan A. Rebelatto, Diego A. Mayer, Joao H. C. Wancura, J. Vladimir Oliveira

Summary: Sugar esters (SE) are amphiphilic compounds with environmentally friendly features, including non-toxicity, odorless, tasteless, biodegradability, and various functions. The use of lipases as biocatalysts for SE production offers advantages such as reduced energy consumption, higher selectivity, and less use of harmful solvents. Supercritical fluids, especially carbon dioxide, are attractive solvents for SE production due to their unique properties. However, there are challenges in terms of operating conditions and costs. Future research should focus on developing cost-effective bioreactors and enhancing lipases' stability. Rating: 8

Summary: This study evaluated the adsorptive process for the removal of water-soluble organic compounds (WSO), specifically naphthenic acids, in synthetic and real oilfield produced water (OPW). The results showed that WSO adsorption capacity was higher at lower pH values. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model, while the equilibrium parameters were represented by the isothermal BET model. Desorption followed the second-order model, with 0.3 M and 0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution demonstrating the highest desorption efficiency in synthetic and real systems, respectively. The adsorbent was effective for up to three consecutive cycles without significant loss of efficiency, and the treated effluent met legal parameters for offshore disposal, enhancing its industrial application.

Maximal Exercise Improves the Levels of Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Heart Failure Patients

Suiane Cavalcante, Sofia Viamonte, Rui S. Cadilha, Ilda P. Ribeiro, Ana Cristina Goncalves, Joao Sousa-Venancio, Marisol Gouveia, Manuel Teixeira, Mario Santos, Jose Oliveira, Fernando Ribeiro

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effects of a single exercise bout on the circulating levels of EPCs and CECs in heart failure patients. The results showed that a single exercise bout increased the levels of EPCs but didn't change the levels of CECs. Heart failure patients had lower levels of EPCs compared to the age-matched group, but the exercise bout restored their EPCs levels to a level similar to the age-matched group.
