This study investigated the effect of a composite coating of 10% gum arabic and crude extracts of ginger, turmeric, and dukung anak separately on the postharvest quality of dragon fruit. The results showed that the composite coating of 10% GA with turmeric extract at 10 gL(-1) significantly reduced anthracnose and maintained the postharvest quality of the fruit.
Several natural preservative techniques including plant extracts are used to minimize postharvest losses caused by pathogens. Our recent findings elucidated that the application of crude extracts of ginger, turmeric, and dukung anak (Phyllanthus niruri Linn.) alone causes phytotoxicity and adversely affects the postharvest quality of dragon fruit, especially at high concentrations. This study investigated the effect of a composite coating of 10% gum arabic (GA) and crude extracts of ginger, turmeric, and dukung anak separately at 5, 10, and 15 gL(-1) on postharvest quality of dragon fruit stored at 11 +/- 2 degrees C, 80% RH for 28 days. After 28 days of cold storage, anthracnose was significantly reduced in fruit coated with 10% GA plus 10 or 15 gL(-1) of any of the crude extracts and resolved the problem of phytotoxicity while maintaining the postharvest quality of fruit for 28 days. The reduction of anthracnose was pronounced at 10% GA+10 gL(-1) of turmeric extract (38.6%) which was not significantly different at 10% GA+10 gL(-)(1) of ginger extract compared to control (41.3%). Composite coating of 10% GA+10 gL(-1) of turmeric extract maintained the postharvest quality of dragon fruit as was evident with a reduction in weight loss (2.53%), delayed degradation of titratable acids (0.15%), and maintained fruit firmness (28.72 N) and the overall acceptability of the fruit after 28 days. We conclude that incorporation of 10% GA with turmeric extract at a high concentration can serve as a potential biofungicide in postharvest management of fresh produced by reducing phytotoxicity while improving the overall acceptability of fruit.

Summary: Nanoscience and nanotechnology provide a new lease of life for conventional pesticides by improving bioavailability and efficacy, ultimately enhancing plant disease control. Two-dimensional layered hydroxides and layered double hydroxides act as hosts, offering a new generation of effective agrochemicals. These technologies address the growing demand for food while being environmentally friendly and safe for humans.

Summary: The agricultural sector is facing the challenge of increasing food production while minimizing the impact on the ecosystem, environment, and human health. In recent decades, frontier technologies have been developed to improve the sustainability of agricultural production systems by reducing synthetic agrochemicals. One potential innovation is the use of natural substances as plant bio-stimulants to enhance nutrient uptake and tolerance to abiotic factors. Nano-technology is also a useful tool for developing effective plant bio-stimulants to boost crop production and achieve food security.

Current strategies, perspectives and challenges in management and control of postharvest diseases of papaya

Guang Heng Tan, Asgar Ali, Yasmeen Siddiqui

Summary: Papaya is an essential produce in tropical countries due to its nutritional and economic benefits. However, postharvest decay caused by various pathogens can lead to significant fruit quality changes. Different control strategies, such as chemical, physical, and biological control, have been used to delay disease establishment. Safe and cost-effective alternatives to synthetic fungicides are being explored.

Summary: Postharvest diseases and quality degradation are the main causes of food losses in the fresh produce supply chain. Electronic nose (EN) has gained popularity as a non-invasive analysis tool for detecting odor profiles and establishing volatile biomarkers. However, there is limited research on the early detection of postharvest diseases in fresh produce using EN.

Summary: Detection of internal damage and insect infestation on intact mango fruit is challenging, and visual comparison is unreliable. This study aimed to identify a non-destructive method for detecting spoilage in mango seeds. A Deep Convolutional Neural Network model achieved an accuracy rate of 97.66% in identifying bad seed from good seed. This model could enhance the quality of mango products by promoting non-destructive early detection of seed deterioration.

Major fungal postharvest diseases of papaya: Current and prospective diagnosis methods

Guang Heng Tan, Asgar Ali, Yasmeen Siddiqui

Summary: Papaya has become an important crop in Malaysia, but suffers from serious postharvest losses due to poor handling. To reduce these losses, early diagnosis and identification of postharvest diseases are recommended. Traditional and advanced techniques such as molecular and immunological approaches can be used for disease identification, but biosensors are the optimal choice for field diagnosis due to their effectiveness and user-friendliness. Delaying disease establishment can be achieved by understanding the pathogen's identity.
