Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a flammable, colorless and hazardous gas. Initially it was considered as an environment toxic gas; but, after its endogenous production discovery in plants, a wide variety of functions have been found associated with H2S. H2S plays an imperative role in the modulation of ripening and quality changes in various fruits and vegetables by regulating certain physiological aspects such as respiration, ethylene biosynthesis, color metabolism, enzymatic browning, softening, chilling injury and postharvest decay during storage. H2S also acts as a signaling molecule to combat against oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to up-regulation of antioxidative enzymes activities. Reduced membrane permeability, inhibited lipid peroxidation, up-regulation of antioxidant activities and inhibition of ROS production eventually leads to reduced senescence having conserved quality with extended shelf or cold storage life of H2S treated fruits and vegetables. Potential of H2S in delaying ripening and reducing senescence of fruits and vegetables is generally accepted. However, it may be worth considering the commercial H2S application as a strategy of conserving external color, retarding senescence and reducing various physiological storage disorders of fruits and vegetables with acceptable consumer quality in the future. This review summarizes the possible role and mechanism of H2S in prolonging storage life and conserving the quality attributes of fruit and vegetable crops during shelf or low temperature storage.

Insect-facilitated propagation of mycotoxic fungi in grain storages: association of Sitotroga cerealella Olivier with Aspergillus flavus link

A. A. Khan, U. Umar, S. Ejaz, H. Riaz, M. Batool, T. Chen, F. Ahmad, Q. Saeed

Summary: This study found that a significant quantity of wheat is lost during storage due to insect and fungal pest complexes. The study also identified Sitotroga cerealella as an important factor in propagating mycotoxic fungi. The prevalence of Aspergillus flavus was higher when S. cerealella co-infested the grain with fungal species. Additionally, the study found that adult moths were attracted to fungal contaminated seeds. Further investigation is suggested to understand the chemical basis of the mutualistic association between A. flavus and S. cerealella for efficient management of grain losses.

Rh(II)-Catalyzed Chemoselective Oxy-alkynylation of Acceptor-Acceptor Carbenes: Synthesis of C2-Quaternary Alkyne-Substituted 3(2H)-Furanones

Qing Liu, Yang-Ting Ma, Xiao-Yan Huang, Yan-Zhen Li, Fang Yang, Shaukat Ali, Kegong Ji, Zi-Sheng Chen

Summary: A Rh-(II)-catalyzed oxy-alkynylation of acceptor-acceptorcarbenes using EBX reagents has been successfully developed. The key step of alkyne transfer is likely to involve a tandem process including beta-addition, alpha-elimination, and 1,2-shift, supported by the formation of alkylidene carbene. This reaction allows the smooth synthesis of various C2-quaternary alkyne-substituted benzofuran-3-ones and 2,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted 3-(2H)-furanones, depending on the choice of diazo compounds and base additives. Furthermore, this reaction exhibits mild conditions, high functional group compatibility, and a broad substrate scope.

Humma Nawaz, Ismail Shah, Sajid Ali

Summary: In recent decades, researchers have been focused on evaluating the relationship between connectivity of brain regions and psychiatric disorders. This study used a meta-analysis approach to investigate the relationship between structural and functional connectivity of the amygdala and depression, suicide ideation, and suicide behavior. The results revealed that structural amygdala connectivity was positively associated with depression instability, while resting state and task functional connectivity showed a significant negative connection with depression. The study also found partial activation of the amygdala in non-suicidal self-injuries and suicide ideation, as well as the moderating effect of participant age on amygdala connectivity with psychiatric conditions.

Robust Surveillance Schemes Based on Proportional Hazard Model for Monitoring Reliability Data

Moezza Nabeel, Sajid Ali, Ismail Shah, Mohammed M. A. Almazah, Fuad S. Al-Duais

Summary: Product reliability is essential in industrial production, but current statistical process control techniques are only suitable for single-stage processes. However, manufacturing processes typically consist of multiple stages, and the quality variable of one stage affects the quality of subsequent stages. This interdependence between stages must be considered in process monitoring. Additionally, outliers in datasets can impact the accuracy of analysis. This study discusses monitoring reliability data with outliers in a two-stage dependent manufacturing process and proposes robust regression techniques for handling outliers.

Effects of paper pouches of different light transmittance on the phenolic synthesis and related gene expression in peach fruit

Ziwen Su, Juan Yan, Binbin Zhang, Meng Sun, Zhixiang Cai, Zhijun Shen, Ruijuan Ma, Mingliang Yu

Summary: Bagging is a crucial cultivation measure that affects the quality of peach fruit by regulating exposure to light. This study investigated the effects of bagging on the content of phenolic compounds in peach fruit and identified the most sensitive compounds to bagging treatment. The study also explored the regulatory role of bagging on phenolic synthetic-related genes. The results showed that bagging affected the accumulation of different phenolics in different peach cultivars and light intensity played a significant role in the accumulation of anthocyanins and other phenolic substances in peach fruit. Additionally, the expression of structural genes and transcription factors related to phenolic synthesis was regulated by bagging and light conditions. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the regulation mechanism of light on the synthesis of phenolic compounds in peach fruit.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water stress on cocoa trees and found that they are highly sensitive to water stress, with different genotypes exhibiting varied responses. Potassium application did not mitigate the negative effects of water stress. There was significant variation among genotypes in terms of leaf and crown traits, and positive interactions between genotype and irrigation were observed. These findings provide insights into the acclimation strategies of cocoa trees and can be useful for selecting drought-tolerant genotypes.
