'Tonda di Giffoni' is among the most highly appreciated Italian hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) cultivars. Due to its round kernels and excellent processing quality, it was awarded a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from the European Union. To identify clones expressing improved nut and production qualities, a 'Tonda di Giffoni' clonal selection programme was conducted across hazelnut orchards in the Irno valley of Italy from 1995 to 2006. One hundred different clones were selected and propagated in a replicated trial under similar climate, soil, and cultural conditions. From this work, the 29 best clones were identified and from 2006 to 2008 their agronomic and pomological characteristics were observed. Microsatellite or simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to successfully confirm true-to-type identity of the clones. Traits evaluated included flowering time (anthesis), bud break, suckering, trunk diameter, nut and kernel characteristics and productivity (yield). Best linear unbiased predictions for clone means and estimates of intraclass correlation coefficient were obtained using R environment, Ime4 and ggplot2 packages. Five clones superior to that of the standard of 'Tonda di Giffoni' were identified in this study. Furthermore, yield and number of suckers produced showed sufficient variability to likely be exploited for breeding. The selected clones express features useful for both growers and the processing industry and will be propagated and planted in hazelnut orchards for further study and commercial production. Somatic embryogenesis is an effective strategy for dissecting chimerism phenomena in Vitis vinifera cv Nebbiolo

Giorgio Gambino, Amedeo Moine, Paolo Boccacci, Irene Perrone, Chiara Pagliarani

Summary: This study discussed the tendency of somatic embryogenesis to regenerate plants only from the L1 layer, emphasizing the importance of carefully considering this phenomenon in biotechnological improvement programmes in grapevines. The research successfully separated two genotypes associated with the L1 and L2 layers of the Vitis vinifera 'Nebbiolo' CVT185 clone using somatic embryogenesis technique.

Salinity Duration Differently Modulates Physiological Parameters and Metabolites Profile in Roots of Two Contrasting Barley Genotypes

Emilia Dell'Aversana, Kamel Hessini, Selma Ferchichi, Giovanna Marta Fusco, Pasqualina Woodrow, Loredana F. Ciarmiello, Chedly Abdelly, Petronia Carillo

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the morphological, physiological and biochemical changes occurring at root level in H. maritimum and the salt sensitive cultivar H. vulgare L. cv. Lamsi under extended salt stress conditions. H. maritimum was able to compartmentalize higher amounts of sodium in the roots, avoiding transferring it to the shoot and impairing photosynthetic metabolism. This root-level strategy allowed the wild species to delay the onset of stress symptoms and enhance survival under transient soil salinity.

Melatonin treatment reduces qualitative decay and improves antioxidant system in highbush blueberry fruit during cold storage

Anna Magri, Milena Petriccione

Summary: Melatonin treatment can effectively reduce weight loss and delay postharvest ripening of highbush blueberries. It promotes the production of polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and ascorbic acid, enhancing the antioxidant activity of the fruit. The enzymatic antioxidant system is also positively influenced by the treatment, resulting in higher activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase. Melatonin treatment slows down enzymatic browning and preserves the qualitative traits of the fruit during cold storage.

Stress responses and epigenomic instability mark the loss of somatic embryogenesis competence in grapevine

Silvia Dal Santo, Emanuele De Paoli, Chiara Pagliarani, Alessandra Amato, Mirko Celii, Paolo Boccacci, Sara Zenoni, Giorgio Gambino, Irene Perrone

Summary: Genetic and epigenetic factors play critical roles in somatic embryogenesis (SE) in grapevine, with upregulation of epigenetic-related transcripts and short interfering RNAs associated with DNA hypermethylation observed during embryonic callus formation. Additionally, genotype-specific transcriptomic differences and stress response genes may influence SE competence and provide insights for biotechnological applications in fruit crop breeding.

Summary: Using high-throughput RNA sequencing, the viromes of grapevines were analyzed, revealing the presence of known and new viruses and viroids. In addition, a distinction was observed between viruses/viroids and mycoviruses, which can be exploited for identification purposes. Effects of paper pouches of different light transmittance on the phenolic synthesis and related gene expression in peach fruit

Ziwen Su, Juan Yan, Binbin Zhang, Meng Sun, Zhixiang Cai, Zhijun Shen, Ruijuan Ma, Mingliang Yu

Summary: Bagging is a crucial cultivation measure that affects the quality of peach fruit by regulating exposure to light. This study investigated the effects of bagging on the content of phenolic compounds in peach fruit and identified the most sensitive compounds to bagging treatment. The study also explored the regulatory role of bagging on phenolic synthetic-related genes. The results showed that bagging affected the accumulation of different phenolics in different peach cultivars and light intensity played a significant role in the accumulation of anthocyanins and other phenolic substances in peach fruit. Additionally, the expression of structural genes and transcription factors related to phenolic synthesis was regulated by bagging and light conditions. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the regulation mechanism of light on the synthesis of phenolic compounds in peach fruit.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water stress on cocoa trees and found that they are highly sensitive to water stress, with different genotypes exhibiting varied responses. Potassium application did not mitigate the negative effects of water stress. There was significant variation among genotypes in terms of leaf and crown traits, and positive interactions between genotype and irrigation were observed. These findings provide insights into the acclimation strategies of cocoa trees and can be useful for selecting drought-tolerant genotypes.
