Antioxidant activity and hepatoprotective effects of whey protein and Spirulina in rats

Objectives: The aims of the present study were to evaluate the antioxidant, radical scavenging, and metal-chelating activity of whey protein concentrate (WPC) and Spirulina alone or in combination in vitro and to evaluate their hepatoprotective effects against CCl4 in vivo. Methods: Five concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mg/100 mL) of WPC, Spirulina, and their combination were tested in vitro. In the in vivo study, eight groups of male rats comprised the control group and the groups treated with WPC, Spirulina alone, or in combination with or without CCl4 were used. Results: The in vitro study showed that WPC and Spirulina showed antioxidant, radical scavenging, and metal-chelating activities in dose-dependent manner. The in vivo study showed that both agents succeeded in preventing liver damage induced by CCl4. This prevention was more pronounced in rats receiving the combination of WPC and Spirulina. Conclusion: Whey protein concentrate and Spirulina have free radical scavenging properties and antioxidant activity. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study found that encapsulated cinnamon oil (ECO) could potentially protect against adverse effects induced by titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs), reducing oxidative stress, DNA damage, chromosomal aberrations, and reproductive disturbances. Co-administration of TiO2NPs and ECO showed dose-dependent alleviation of these disturbances, suggesting ECO as a promising and safe candidate for protecting against the health hazards of TiO2NPs.

Antibacterial efficacy of lactic acid bacteria and bacteriocin isolated from Dadih's against Staphylococcus aureus

Summary: This study evaluated the characteristics of bacteriocin from dadih's LAB and found that it has the ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Several LAB strains showed antimicrobial activity through the action of organic acids or bacteriocin. Bacteriocin strain R-55 exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect against S. aureus.

Antidepressant and antioxidant effects of transcranial irradiation with 830-nm low-power laser in an animal model of depression

Summary: The study demonstrates the antidepressant and antioxidant effects of near-infrared low-power laser in a rat model of depression induced by repeated doses of reserpine. The laser irradiation increases monoamine levels and reduces oxidative stress in the rat brain, while also showing antidepressant effects on behavior. These findings suggest that low-laser irradiation may be a potential treatment modality for depression.

Efficacy of ginsenoside Rg3 nanoparticles against Ehrlich solid tumor growth in mice

Summary: Solid tumors are difficult to surgically remove and often do not respond to radiation and chemotherapy. This study fabricated ginsenoside Rg3 nanoparticles and evaluated their antitumor effect in mice. The results showed that Rg3-NPs were more effective than regular Rg3 in reducing tumor weight and size, and the effect was dose-dependent. The fabrication of Rg3-NPs enhanced the protective effect against tumor development.

Summary: This study evaluates the oxidative damage, genotoxicity, and DNA damage in the liver of rats treated with titanium nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) and examines the protective role of holy basil essential oil nanoemulsion (HBEON). The results suggest that co-administration of TiO2-NPs plus HBEON improves all tested parameters and liver histology, with HBEON being more effective. This study highlights the potential of HBEON in protecting against oxidative damage and DNA damage caused by TiO2-NPs exposure.

Synthesis of Antibacterial Bioactive Compounds Using Linoleic Acid Extracted from Melon Seeds Oil and Evaluation of Its Waste Meal Ash for Fried Oil Regeneration

Summary: This study aimed to develop biological compounds using linoleic acid extracted from melon seed oil, and to treat fried oils using melon seed cake ash. Eight active compounds were developed and their structures were determined. These compounds showed antibacterial activity. Melon seed oil was rich in linoleic acid (61.4%) and other fatty acids. Linoleic acid had high refractive index, iodine value, saponification, while having low peroxide value, polymer content, polar contents, and moisture content. Melon seed ash contained various metals and improved the physicochemical properties of fried oils. Linoleic acid was used to develop 9 compounds with antimicrobial activity, and melon seed ash improved the chemical characteristics of used cotton and sunflower oils.

Zinc citrate-coated whey protein nanoparticles alleviate kidney damage and the disturbances in inflammatory gene expression in rats

Summary: This study aimed to synthesize whey protein nanoparticles (WPNPs) for the coating of zinc citrate (Zn CITR) and investigate their protective role against CCl4-induced kidney damage and inflammatory gene expression disorder in rats. The results showed that WPNPs and Zn CITR-WPNPs had a protective effect against these complications, with Zn CITR-WPNPs (LD) being the most effective.

Summary: This study aimed to assess maternal dietary intake patterns, anthropometric measures, and biochemical markers in women with gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence. The results showed that pregnant women in the gestational diabetes mellitus pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence group had higher body mass index, arm circumference, and triceps skinfold than the other groups, indicating an obesogenic maternal environment. Significant differences in dietary food intake were also observed. The study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategy for pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence to address obesity and micronutrient deficiencies.

Preserved mitochondrial metabolism emerges as a potential target for obesity treatment using PPAR agonists, with possible clinical applications.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency of breakfast consumption and its associations with the consumption of food at different degrees of industrial processing and with overweight indicators in Brazilian adolescents. The results showed that 20% of adolescents skipped breakfast and 46% of their caloric intake came from ultra-processed foods. Skipping breakfast was associated with increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, higher BMI-for-age, and higher body fat percentage.
