Herein we firstly reported a simple, environment-friendly, controllable synthetic method of CuSe nanosnakes at room temperature using copper salts and sodium selenosulfate as the reactants, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) as foaming agent. As the amounts of selenide ions (Se2-) released from Na2SeSO3 in the solution increased, the cubic and snake-like CuSe nanostructures were formed gradually, the cubic nanostructures were captured by the CuSe nanosnakes, the CuSe nanosnakes grew wider and longer as the reaction time increased. Finally, the cubic CuSe nanostructures were completely replaced by BSA-CuSe nanosnakes. The prepared BSA-CuSe nanosnakes exhibited enhanced biocompatibility than the CuSe nanocrystals, which highly suggest that as-prepared BSA-CuSe nanosnakes have great potentials in applications such as biomedical engineering.

Summary: In this study, a photo/sono-responsive nanoplatform was developed for photoacoustic/photothermal bimodal imaging-guided sonodynamic therapy (SDT) using TiO2-x nanoparticles synthesized on the surface of two-dimensional MXene. The nanoplatform showed enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation due to charge trap effect of the TiO2-x nanoparticles and tumor hypoxia relief through localized hyperthermia induced by the Ti3C2 nanosheets. The dual-stimuli nanoplatform achieved substantial cellular killing in vitro and complete tumor eradication in vivo.

Summary: This study presents a glucose oxidase-engineered nanoplatform for activatable imaging-based companion diagnostics and multistage augmented photothermal/starvation synergistic therapy. The nanoplatform utilizes a pH-activatable conjugated polymer as a photothermal converter and photoacoustic emitter, glucose oxidase as a cancer starvation inducer, and a H2O2-cleavable linker as a switch for enzyme activity. The in vivo imaging and therapy abilities are activated by the acidic tumor microenvironment and self-augmented by the reaction between glucose oxidase and glucose.

Chenle Dong, Chen Yang, Muhammad Rizwan Younis, Jing Zhang, Gang He, Xingdi Qiu, Lian-Hua Fu, Dong-Yang Zhang, Hao Wang, Wenli Hong, Jing Lin, Xueqing Wu, Peng Huang

Summary: A NIR-II light-responsive shape memory composite has been developed for preventing intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) and promoting the regeneration of injured endometrium. The composite, consisting of cuprorivaite nanosheets as photothermal conversion agents and a polymer as shape memory building blocks, shows excellent shape memory performance and antiadhesion effect under NIR-II light. In addition, the released ions can stimulate endometrial regeneration. This study provides a new strategy for treating IUAs and has important clinical implications.

EDTA enhances the photodegradation of p-arsanilic acid in the presence of iron at near-neutral pH

Chuxuan Zhao, Zixin Liu, Yi Wu, Juntao Guo, Peng Huang, Yifei Wang, Yeheng Leng, Ivan P. Pozdnyakov, Jing Xu, Feng Wu

Summary: The widespread use of organic arsenic pesticides and veterinary drugs has drawn attention, as their photochemical transformation in surface water contributes to degradation and the formation of products. This study investigates the effect of co-existent components, such as EDTA, on the photochemical transformation, and finds that the Fe(III)-EDTA complex exhibits photoactivity under both UVA light and simulated sunlight. Appropriate amounts of EDTA enhance the photodegradation efficiency, while excessive amounts suppress the reaction rate.
