Exploring the use of scions and rootstocks from xeric areas to improve drought tolerance in Castanea sativa Miller

Alvaro Camison, M. Angela Martin, Victor Flors, Paloma Sanchez-Bel, Gloria Pinto, Maria Vivas, Victor Rolo, Alejandro Solla

Summary: The study showed that using scions and rootstocks from xeric areas can enhance drought tolerance in chestnut trees originating from humid areas. By controlling the hormone and proline content in trees, it is possible to improve the chestnut trees' resistance to drought stress.

Employing phytosulfokine ? (PSK?) for delaying broccoli florets yellowing during cold storage

Morteza Soleimani Aghdam, Francisco Borja Flores

Summary: The study found that PSK can delay florets yellowing in broccoli during cold storage by upregulating the expression of SIZ1 gene, reducing endogenous H2O2 accumulation, and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, florets treated with PSK showed higher endogenous cytokinin accumulation.

Disclosure of salicylic acid and jasmonic acid-responsive genes provides a molecular tool for deciphering stress responses in soybean

Sebastian F. Beyer, Paloma Sanchez Bel, Victor Flors, Holger Schultheiss, Uwe Conrath, Caspar J. G. Langenbach

Summary: The study conducted global transcriptome analyses on soybean crop and found that salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) activate different defense hormone-responsive genes, with SA predominantly activating genes related to the immune system and JA mainly activating genes associated with wound responses. Genes responding to SA were activated earlier than those responding to JA.

Deciphering of benzothiadiazole (BTH)-induced response of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and its effect on early response to virus infection through the multi-omics approach

Patryk Frackowiak, Barbara Wrzesinska, Przemyslaw Wieczorek, Paloma Sanchez-Bel, Laura Kunz, Antje Dittmann, Aleksandra Obrepalska-Steplowska

Summary: This study investigated the effects of benzo(1,2,3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid S-methyl ester (BTH) treatment on the defense and developmental processes in tomato plants. Multi-omics analyses revealed that BTH treatment significantly influenced the plant's immune response and activation of certain genes, as well as the accumulation of important phytohormones. The study also uncovered the involvement of BTH in the induction of thiamine metabolism in tomatoes. These findings provide valuable insights into the plant's defense mechanisms against virus infections.

Salt-tolerant alternative crops as sources of quality food to mitigate the negative impact of salinity on agricultural production

Isabel Egea, Yanira Estrada, Celia Faura, Jose M. Egea-Fernandez, Maria C. Bolarin, Francisco B. Flores

Summary: Improved abiotic stress tolerance and nutritive value in food is crucial due to climate change and increasing population. Among these stresses, salt stress is a major problem in agriculture. In order to utilize marginal lands affected by salinity and low-quality saline water, exploring new sources of genetic variation like salt-tolerant alternative crops or underexploited crops is a promising approach.
