BACKGROUND: Seafood is an important constituent of the human diet. In Iran, Indian white shrimp (Fenneropenaeus indicus) is the major cultured shrimp species as a result of market demand, local availability and growth rate. it is mainly reared using commercial feed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing 50% of the fish oil by vegetable oils in shrimp feed on total lipid, fatty acid composition and lipid oxidation of shrimp muscle. RESULTS: No significant differences in total lipid content (6.1-7.3 g kg(-1)) were found between edible tissues of shrimp fed different diets. The major fatty acids in shrimp muscle were palmitic, oleic, lionoleic, stearic, eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids. Higher levels of EPA and DHA were observed in muscle of shrimp fed a diet containing fish oil. Oxidative rancidity, measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, for all shrimps did not exceed 0.2 mg malonaldehyde kg(-1) muscle tissue, which was low and acceptable. CONCLUSION: This study had shown that the fatty acid composition of feed directly affects the fatty acid composition of Indian white shrimp muscle. Farmed Indian white shrimp can be considered as a species of low fat and shrimp muscle was quite stable to oxidation during storage. (c) 2009 Society of Chemical Industry

Soya bean-based diets plus probiotics improve the profile of fatty acids, digestibility, intestinal microflora, growth performance and the innate immunity of beluga (Huso huso)

Summary: This study investigated the effects of using different methods of probiotics Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis in soya bean-based diets on the physiology of beluga (Huso huso). Feeding fish with the 70%SBM-SPRAY2 diet improved fish growth and health, as evidenced by higher blood performance values and lower levels of total protein and RBC in fish fed with 70%SBM compared to other treatments. Additionally, fish fed with dietary probiotics showed significantly higher levels of lysozyme, alternative complement activity, and total viable counts.

Summary: Protein restriction is a less-studied nutritional strategy in aquaculture species. This study investigated the effects of protein restriction for different durations on the growth performance, body composition, and immune response of rainbow trout, suggesting that WP35-P45 is a suitable feeding strategy for rainbow trout aquaculture.

Influence of dietary acetic acid, protexin (probiotic), and their combination on growth performance, intestinal microbiota, digestive enzymes, immunological parameters, and fatty acids composition in Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii, Brandt, 1869)

Summary: This study investigated the effects of dietary acetic acid, probiotic protexin, and their combination on growth performance, intestinal microbiota, digestive enzymes, immune responses, and fatty acids composition in Siberian sturgeon. Fish fed with a combination of 2% acetic acid and 0.01% protexin showed the highest final body weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate. The results suggest that incorporating acetic acid in the diet, either alone or supplemented with protexin, could be effective as functional feed additives in Siberian sturgeon.

Summary: The study found that replacing fish meal with barley protein concentrate (BPC) and wheat gluten meal (WGM) in Caspian brown trout diets can improve growth performance and digestibility. It was also observed that increasing BCP levels in the diets led to a decrease in the activities of protein and aminopeptidase enzymes.
