Negative consequences of diabetes on the prostate such as involution are associated with diminished testosterone, insulin deficiency, and hyperglycemia. The contributions of oxidative damage, which usually increases with diabetes, are unknown for these alterations. This study evaluated the impact of streptozotocin-induced diabetes on the biomarkers of the antioxidant system of rat ventral prostate, the influence of vitamin C supplementation on these biomarkers, and on the balance between cell proliferation and death. Diabetes (D) was induced in Wistar male rats by streptozotocin (5?mg/100?g b.w., i.p.). Control animals (C) were injected with a vehicle. Vitamin C (150?mg/kg b.w./day) supplementation was introduced by gavage in diabetes (D?+?V) as well as control (C?+?V) groups. Thirty days after diabetes onset, the rats were killed and the ventral prostates were analyzed using light microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and biochemical assays for biomarkers of oxidative stress. In comparison to control groups, the levels of circulating testosterone, proliferating, and androgen receptor-positive cells decreased in diabetic groups regardless of vitamin C treatment whereas apoptosis was increased. The levels of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase did not change, but the levels of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were increased in diabetic prostate. Vitamin C supplementation normalized GST activity and recovered the apoptotic rates in the prostate. In conclusion, GST is a good indicator of compensatory oxidant defense in the prostate at earlier stages of diabetes and vitamin C improves its activity and attenuates apoptosis in the gland. J. Proteoglycans orchestrate remodeling of prostatic cytoarchitecture after androgenic blockade in old gerbils

Silvana G. P. Campos, Bianca F. Goncalves, Thalles Fernando Rocha Ruiz, Ellen Cristina R. Leonel, Daniele L. Ribeiro, Luiz Roberto Falleiros Junior, Rejane M. Goes, Sebastiao R. Taboga

Summary: This study evaluated changes in proteoglycan morphology and composition in the prostatic stroma of castrated gerbils. Results showed an increase in chondroitin sulfate frequency after androgen blockade and an increase in perlecan content. The length and shape of proteoglycans were also altered. These findings suggest that proteoglycans might respond to androgen deprivation independently of androgenic regulation.

Summary: Maternal obesity and high-fat diet during breastfeeding lead to stromal hyperplasia and diffuse acinar atrophy in the aging rat prostate, which is closely related to dyslipidemia and reduced testosterone levels. The high-lipid nutritional environment from intrauterine and throughout life facilitates the development of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and worsens degenerative changes in the gland.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the insecticide fipronil on the GABAergic responses of the Nile Tilapia to hypoxia. The results show that hypoxia has opposite effects on the gene transcription of ionotropic and metabotropic GABA receptors, while fipronil impairs the brain GABAergic signaling of hypoxia-tolerant fish during the transition from normoxia to acute hypoxia.

Summary: Despite being highly diverse and widely distributed, the reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) of bats have received limited attention in research. This study aimed to analyze and compare the composition, anatomy, and histology of male RAGs in three cosmopolitan bat families (Vespertilionidae, Molossidae, and Emballonuridae). The results revealed that the RAGs of these bat species consist of an intra-abdominal prostatic complex, urethral glands, and inguinal bulbourethral glands, but lack ampullary glands or seminal vesicles. The prostatic complex varies in the number of regions and lobed structure among the species.

Liana Silva Gomes, Danilo da Silva Lima, Janaina Ribeiro Costa, Jane Sousa Naves, Mara Rubia Marques, Sebastiao Roberto Taboga, Paulo Cesar Ghedini, Manoel Francisco Biancardi, Fernanda Cristina Alcantara dos Santos

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of aluminum neonatal exposure on the male and female gerbil prostates. Results showed that adult male prostates exhibited moderate hyperplasia and increased cell proliferation, while senile males showed intense hyperplasia. Additionally, there was a reduction in prostate secretory function at both ages. Female prostates exhibited similar morphological changes to males, with adult females showing a lower regulation of androgen receptor and estrogen receptor alpha, and senile females showing intense hyperplastic growth with an increase in estrogen receptor alpha and a reduction in stromal androgen receptor.

Summary: Global demand for crops will increase in the future, contributing to the expansion of arable land and loss of natural habitats. This study in Brazil examined the impact of agrochemicals and landscape changes on tropical freshwater biodiversity. The findings suggest that certain frog species are negatively affected by high concentrations of agrochemicals in sugarcane-dominated agroecosystems, highlighting the importance of conserving ponds near forests and reducing agrochemical runoffs.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of different temperatures and exposure to the herbicide ametryn on the thyroidogenesis of bullfrog tadpoles. Results showed that higher temperature and ametryn exposure caused a delay in tadpole development and decreased the area and number of follicles in the thyroid gland. Transcript levels of thyroid hormone receptors and iodothyronine deiodinase 3 were lower at higher temperatures, indicating a developmental delay. Tadpoles exposed to high levels of ametryn also exhibited delayed development and lower transcript levels, possibly related to lower levels of estradiol.

Summary: This study characterized the chemical composition of brewer's spent yeast (BSY) from two different beer productions and tested its cytotoxicity in various cell lineages. The results showed that BSY samples had similar lipid and ash content but slight differences in other nutritional components. BSY2 sample had higher concentrations of glucans and phenolic compounds. Both BSY1 and BSY2 extracts demonstrated similar antioxidant capacity and were not cytotoxic to most cell lines except PANC-1 cells. These findings suggest that brewery residue can be a value-added functional food with potential adjuvant role against PANC-1 cell lines.

Summary: This study demonstrates that exposure of pregnant and lactating women to the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) can impact their ovarian function and accelerate aging of the ovaries. Ovaries exposed to BPA showed impaired follicle development and disruption in hormone signaling. BPA exposure also affected steroidogenesis, leading to decreased levels of estrogen and testosterone. These changes play a significant role in follicular development and contribute to perimenopausal and infertile features.
