This paper presents an efficient and automated scheme to observe error motions of rotary axes on a five-axis machine tool by using the R-test. During a five-axis measurement cycle, the R-test sensors nest measures the three-dimensional displacement of a sphere attached to the spindle in the coordinate system attached on the rotary table. This paper first demonstrates an intuitive, graphical presentation method of R-test measurements to understand how error motions of rotary table change in three-dimensional space depending on the swiveling angle. A critical issue with the error calibration by the R-test is that error motions of linear axes must be sufficiently small as a prerequisite to calibrate component errors of rotary axes. To partially address this issue, this paper proposes a scheme to separate squareness errors of linear axes by performing a set of R-test measurement cycles with different sphere positions. Summary: This paper proposes a new machining test to evaluate the influence of rotation direction reversal on surface geometry and roughness quantitatively. The study finds that smoothing in the machine coordinate system can cause contour errors, while smoothing in the workpiece coordinate system can completely eliminate these errors.

Nan Zhao, Soichi Ibaraki

Summary: This paper proposes a kinematic model and calibration scheme to improve the absolute positioning accuracy of industrial robots. The model includes not only link length errors and angular offsets, but also the error map of angular positioning deviation and the influence of backlash. Experimental results show that the model is effective and the compensation reduces the average absolute position error by 33%.

Summary: This article presents advanced technologies for the calibration of machine tools. It categorizes kinematic errors into intra-axis errors, inter-axis errors, and volumetric errors. It addresses the measurement methods, modeling theories, and compensation strategies for machine tool errors as the major technological elements of machine tool calibration. The criteria for selecting a combination of technological elements for machine tool calibration are provided based on accuracy, complexity, and cost. Recent applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in machine tool calibration are introduced and future trends in machine tool calibration are discussed.
