A detailed comparative study on chemical and bioactive properties of wild and cultivated Ganoderma lucidum from Serbia (GS) and China (GCN) was performed. This species was chosen because of its worldwide use as medicinal mushroom. Higher amounts of sugars were found in GS, while higher amounts of organic acids were recorded in GCN. Unsaturated fatty acids predominated over saturated fatty acids. GCN revealed higher antioxidant activity, while GS exhibited inhibitory potential against human breast and cervical carcinoma cell lines. No cytotoxicity in non-tumour liver primary cell culture was observed for the different samples. Both samples possessed antibacterial and antifungal activities, in some cases even better than the standard antimicrobial drugs. This is the first study reporting a comparison of chemical compounds and bioactivity of G. lucidum samples from different origins.

Antibiotic Resistance among Gastrointestinal Bacteria in Broilers: A Review Focused on Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli

Jessica Ribeiro, Vanessa Silva, Andreia Monteiro, Madalena Vieira-Pinto, Gilberto Igrejas, Filipa S. Reis, Lillian Barros, Patricia Poeta

Summary: Chicken meat is widely consumed around the world, and antibiotics have been used in its production to ensure high levels of output. However, the use of antibiotics in animal production has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, particularly in the gut microbiota. Studies have found resistant strains of Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli in the gastrointestinal tract of chickens, with Enterococcus spp. showing resistance to at least seven classes of antibiotics and E. coli showing resistance to at least four. Some clonal lineages have also been identified in both broilers and humans, suggesting the transmission of bacteria through contaminated food, direct contact with animals, or environmental exposure.

Insights into the Chemical Composition and In Vitro Bioactive Properties of Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) Pericarp

Bianca R. Albuquerque, Maria Ines Dias, Jose Pinela, Ricardo C. Calhelha, Tania C. S. P. Pires, Maria Jose Alves, Rubia C. G. Correa, Isabel C. F. R. Ferreira, Maria Beatriz P. P. Oliveira, Lillian Barros

Summary: The ripe mangosteen pericarp contains seven organic acids, three tocopherol isomers, four fatty acids, and fifteen non-xanthone phenolic compounds. The most efficient extraction of phenolic compounds was achieved using hydroethanolic extract (MT80), followed by ethanolic extract (MTE), and then aqueous extract (MTW). Both MT80 and MTE extracts exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activities. MTW did not show anti-inflammatory properties, while MTE and MT80 inhibited tumor cell lines.

Processing and evaluation of the structure-properties of electrospun PCL/zirconium nanoparticle scaffolds

Blessy Joseph, Amrit Jose John, Jasmina Glamoclija, Dejan Stojkovic, Marina Sokovic, Sasa Lazovic, Jayachandran Kochupurackal, Nandakumar Kalarikkal, Sabu Thomas

Summary: Electrospun fibers with large surface area are beneficial in tissue engineering due to their porous structure which promotes cell adhesion, proliferation, and migration. This study developed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds incorporated with zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles using a simple approach. The scaffolds exhibited interconnected pore structure and the incorporation of nanoparticles was confirmed. Mechanical studies showed that 1 wt% Zirconium dioxide nanoparticles had the highest tensile strength. Furthermore, the scaffolds demonstrated antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus lugdunensis but not against Proteus vulgaris. These ZrO2 loaded PCL scaffolds with desirable properties have potential applications in tissue engineering.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional profiles and antioxidant potential of different lentil varieties, as well as the impact of cultivation type (conventional or organic) and variety on these parameters. The results showed that all the varieties analyzed are an excellent source of fiber and have good antioxidant capacity. Lentil variety has a greater influence on its nutritional composition than the type of cultivation.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol from olive pomace treated by gamma radiation: process optimization and bioactivity assessment

Joana Madureira, Bianca Albuquerque, Maria Ines Dias, Jose Pinela, Ricardo C. Calhelha, Celestino Santos-Buelga, Fernanda M. A. Margaca, Isabel C. F. R. Ferreira, Sandra Cabo Verde, Lillian Barros

Summary: Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was used to recover hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol from olive pomace. Optimization of the extraction process showed that UAE yielded higher amounts of both compounds compared to heat-assisted extraction (HAE). However, HAE extract exhibited greater bioactivity, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and cytotoxic effects, as well as no antifungal potential against C. albicans. These results provide valuable insights for the development of new bioactive ingredients in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Izamara de Oliveira, Antonios Chrysargyris, Tiane C. Finimundy, Marcio Carocho, Celestino Santos-Buelga, Ricardo C. Calhelha, Nikolaos Tzortzakis, Lillian Barros, Sandrina A. Heleno

Summary: In this study, pansy and viola edible flowers were grown hydroponically with varying levels of Mg and Mn. The effects of nutrient levels on plant growth and nutritional composition were investigated, and the chemical compounds and activities in the flowers were analyzed. The results showed that Mg enrichment had a negative impact on plant growth and mineral accumulation, but improved photosynthetic performance. The edible flowers contained significant amounts of protein, low levels of fat, and various sugar contents, and exhibited antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and anti-inflammatory properties. This research not only expands our understanding of Mg and Mn interaction, but also accelerates important advancements in sustainable agriculture and food health, promoting a healthier and more conscious future.
