Summary: The in vitro antioxidation and cytoprotection of abalone visceral peptides against oxidative damage were studied. The DPPH scavenging activities of the synthesized peptides were correlated with their reducing power, while their scavenging activities against ABTS.+ were correlated with their ability to inhibit linoleic acid oxidation. Cys containing peptides exhibited good DPPH scavenging activity, while Tyr containing peptides showed significant ABTS.+ scavenging activity. In the cytoprotection assay, Cys-containing peptides were more effective at increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes, while Tyr-containing peptides were more effective at decreasing MDA levels and LDH leakage.

Summary: Quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory were used to predict the antioxidant potential of urolithins, bioactive gut microbiota metabolites of ellagitannins and ellagic acid. Different reaction mechanisms were considered in water and lipid-like environments to evaluate their ability to counter oxidative stress. The results showed that most urolithins exhibited higher scavenging activity against reactive oxygen species compared to other potent antioxidants, which was confirmed by experimental assays.

Summary: The solubilization of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) in different aqueous surfactant solutions (anionic, cationic, and nonionic) was investigated to improve its solubility and assess its antiradical activity against DPPH. The results showed that the micellar encapsulation and DPPH antiradical activity of BHA were highly dependent on the surfactant structure and amount used. The study is important for identifying the optimal medium to improve solubility and antioxidant capacity of compounds like BHA, and to understand the effects of different micro-heterogeneous/multiphase environments on BHA's antioxidant capability.

Summary: The antioxidant abilities of thiourea derivatives were characterized by measuring the color change of DPPH and ABTS when reacting with the compounds. DPTU exhibited better free radical capture capability compared to BPTU, which was confirmed by quantum chemical calculations. Kinetic calculations revealed that hydrogen atom transfer mechanism is preferred over single electron transfer mechanism when thiourea derivatives react with free radicals, with HAT mechanism accounting for 99.99% of the product amount.

Summary: Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) of metals is a significant industrial problem with annual economic losses of 300-500 billion dollars worldwide. Eco-friendly coatings embedded with corrosion inhibitors developed from natural products, such as cephalopod chitosan, show potential for MIC prevention or control due to their unique biological properties. Chitosan acts as an antimicrobial coating substance by binding to the bacterial cell wall and disrupting its functions. It can also serve as a matrix for embedding other antimicrobial or anticorrosive substances to achieve synergistic effects. Field and laboratory experiments will be conducted to test this hypothesis and identify new eco-friendly MIC inhibitors.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.
