Two new studies reviewing data from 15 countries between April 2020 and June 2021 suggests that stricter COVID-19 measures are associated with negative mental health effects and a lower opinion of the government’s pandemic response. In countries that tried to control virus transmission, the mental health of people was more impacted by COVID-19 than that of people in countries that tried to suppress transmission. Mental health was more affected by physical distancing restrictions than by closures of workplaces, schools, public transport, restrictions on domestic travel, and cancellations of public events. 评论了 Low Protein Intake Is Associated with a Major Reduction in IGF-1, Cancer, and Overall Mortality in the 65 and Younger but Not Older Population
Eating a high-protein (animal-based) diet is similar to smoking 20 cigarettes per day! The authors tracked 6,381 adults over the age of 50 for nearly 20 years and discovered that participants between the ages of 50 and 65 who ate a high-protein diet (i.e. 20% or more of calories coming from protein) were 4 times more likely to die of cancer than those who consumed a low-protein diet (i.e. less than 10% of calories coming from protein). Moreover, participants who ate a high-protein diet had a 5 times greater risk of mortality from type 2 diabetes, and they were 74% more likely to die of any cause than low-protein consumers. Although, the negative health associations of eating too much protein were decreased or eliminated with plant-based protein.

In a meta-analysis (31 studies) on protein intake and disease, which was published by the International Scholarly Research Network published, the main conclusion is that overconsumption of protein was associated with higher rates of osteoporosis, cancer, disorders of liver function, renal disease, and coronary artery disease: https://doi.org/10.5402/2013/126929

评论了 Patterns of plant and animal protein intake are strongly associated with cardiovascular mortality: the Adventist Health Study-2 cohort
The authors examined the percentage of protein that came from animal and plant sources for 81,337 participants over 6–12 years, and they found that the risk of cardiovascular death steadily increased with higher consumption of meat protein and steadily decreased with increased consumption of protein from nuts and seeds.

An international team of researchers from the universities of Portsmouth, Southampton, and Copenhagen discovered a new and uncommon genetic disease that slows down children’s brain development (children’s brains grow abnormally and intellectual development is postponed), which is caused by variations in the protein-coding gene Glutamate Ionotropic Receptor AMPA Type Subunit 1. This finding may help doctors with screening, prenatal diagnosis, and the development of focused treatments to help patients and their families. Study: 🔗https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ajhg.2022.05.009🔗

评论了 Which Sources of Flavonoids: Complex Diets or Dietary Supplements?
This review examined the effects of flavonoids in supplements versus foods. The main conclusion is that the multifaceted mixture of plant compounds cannot be simulated by single-flavonoid supplementation.

评论了 Dietary flavanols improve cerebral cortical oxygenation and cognition in healthy adults
This double-blinded study showed that flavanols found in foods improve brain function and oxygenation levels in the brain in response to a stressful event, and they also help to protect against vascular diseases by improving nitric oxide signaling and supporting endothelial health. Participants had to complete different cognitive tests of increasing difficulty after they drank a cocoa-containing beverage and having their oxygen availability in their brain and body decreased by breathing air with a carbon dioxide concentration 100 times higher than found in regular air. Hence, those who drank the high-flavanol beverage completed the Stroop tests at higher speed and accuracy.
