This journal suggests everyone to be cautious when submitting articles. I previously submitted one and it was accepted, but it only received a Medline retrieval number and was not indexed by SCI. Similarly, other papers submitted during the same period were also only partially indexed by SCI.

First submission, there were three reviewers. One had 8 strict comments, another had 4 comments, and the third had 10 comments but with minor revisions. The editor requested major revisions after which there was a second review process that lasted for a month. After the revisions, the paper was accepted without further modification. There were probably not many re-reviews, overall it was quite fast. The editor's efficiency is very high.
The journal's website and submission process already provide clear instructions. The first 10 pages are exempt from page charges, but any additional page costs $300.

This is the first SCI paper during my master's study. It took about a year from learning the relevant knowledge of DIC, discovering innovative points, starting to write, revising, submitting, major revisions, and finally getting accepted. Applied Optics is relatively friendly to newcomers, and the speed of the review process depends on when the reviewers agree to review. Once it starts, it generally takes about a month to complete. If there are recommended reviewers, it may shorten the submission cycle.

Personal favorite journal. In OSA, I have been accepted by Optics Express, but the publication fee is really expensive and it is easy to be controlled by the editor. However, for Applied Optics, the editors are really good. They helped me format the article into double columns and it's free for articles within 10 pages! Highly recommend Applied Optics!
