It depends on luck. If it is in the hands of the chief editor, it will be fast. If it is in the hands of the deputy editor Huheng at Wuhan University of Technology, it will be particularly slow. Recently, both myself and another person submitted our work together to him. His decision with editor came after one month and it was directly rejected. My work, on the other hand, took 35 days with editor before being sent for review.

In 2019, I encountered a situation where a paper was accepted without review. After submitting it, I immediately started writing my graduation thesis, and it remained in the "with editor" status. Later, the editor-in-chief asked me to revise the introduction because there was a significant overlap in the literature review with my previous articles. However, due to being busy with writing my thesis, I didn't make the revisions in a timely manner. After a month and a half, I finally made the revisions, and a few days later, the paper was directly accepted without any external review. It is said that the editor-in-chief has the authority to accept papers without external review, while other editors do not have this privilege. It seems to be a matter of luck. You should take a look at the articles on micro and nanomechanics in the International Journal of Engineering Science. I feel that they are really strict, as many papers are reviewed within three to five days and then accepted. It feels like they are faking it...

3.22 submit, 4.20 request modifications, one reviewer, only a few comments, not related to the core content of the article, 4.25 revise, 5.21 accept. It took almost exactly two months from submission to acceptance, feels a bit fast..... All emails were signed by Antonio Ferreira, is it because the editor-in-chief was handling it all along?
