Five genotypes of Bene were collected from West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah and Ilam provinces, Iran. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined and antioxidant activity of the extracts were measured using different assays: FRAP, nitric oxide radical scavenging and DPPH. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the hull extracts were significantly higher than shell and kernel extracts. In hull extracts, positive correlation coefficient was observed between total phenolic content and FRAP (R-2 = 0.98) and DPPH (R-2 = 0.66) assays. The results showed that, the highest antioxidant activity of hull extract may be attributed to higher total phenolic content. Analyzing the phenolic composition using HPLC, sinapic acid, vanillic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were found in hull and shell extracts of all genotypes. Among all the genotypes studied here, B4 showed the highest phenolic content and antioxidant activity. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Influence of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi and drought stress on fatty acids profile of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

Esmaeil Gholinezhad, Reza Darvishzadeh

Summary: Research has shown that inoculating AMF can increase sesame's tolerance to drought stress, improve yield, and enhance oil compositions. Severe drought stress significantly reduces yield and some nutrients content, but significantly increases the content of other substances. Overall, inoculating AMF is feasible for improving both the quantity and quality traits of sesame.

Summary: Understanding the molecular effects of salinity stress is essential for improving salt tolerance in Zea mays. This study combined phenotyping and transcript profiling to investigate genotype-specific differences in salt tolerance. The analysis identified unique transcripts and enriched processes related to salt tolerance in the tolerant genotype, suggesting that more efficient potassium uptake and different calcium ion response contribute to better ionic hemostasis and salt tolerance in this genotype.

Arginine catabolism induced by exogenous arginine treatment reduces the loss of green color rate in broccoli florets

Parviz Malekzadeh, Ali Asghar Hatamnia, Martin Ernesto Tiznado-Hernandez

Summary: The exogenous application of L-arginine has positive effects on the shelf life and quality of broccoli florets. It reduces electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde content, while increasing chlorophyll and polyamine content. It also enhances the activity of arginase, L-arginine decarboxylase, and nitric oxide synthase enzymes. These findings suggest that arginine treatment can prevent postharvest damage and preserve the color and freshness of broccoli florets.

The digestion fates of lipids with different unsaturated levels in people with different age groups

Yanan Wang, Jiachen Shi, Yong-Jiang Xu, Chin-Ping Tan, Yuanfa Liu

Summary: This study investigates the variations in lipid digestion profiles among individuals of different ages using in vitro digestion models. The findings suggest that adults have a more comprehensive lipid digestion compared to infants, and infants tend to release shorter chain length and more saturated free fatty acids during digestion. Additionally, the particle sizes in the stomach of the elderly were consistently larger. This study enhances our understanding of how lipids with different degrees of unsaturation undergo digestion in diverse age groups.

Mechanism of aroma enhancement methods in accelerating Congou black tea acidification subjected to room temperature storage

Zixuan Xie, De Zhang, Junyu Zhu, Qianqian Luo, Jun Liu, Jingtao Zhou, Xiaoyong Wang, Yuqiong Chen, Zhi Yu, Dejiang Ni

Summary: This study investigated the acidification of aroma-enhanced black tea during storage. Analysis of non-volatile substances and organic acids using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS and HPLC revealed a decrease in soluble sugars and amino acids, while an increase in organic acids such as oxalic acid, malic acid, and quinic acid. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that the acidification is a result of the decomposition of sugars and amino acids by heating, as well as the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes. Additionally, the study showed that the taste composition of tea infusion is altered, with reduced amino acids, catechins, soluble sugars, and flavonoids. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the quality of black tea.
