Summary: The study focuses on the physico-chemical characteristics of coal and their interrelations, specifically analyzing the effects of particle size on bulk density, specific surface area, and N-2 adsorption capacity of pulverized coals. As particle size decreases, bulk density decreases while specific surface area increases. Furthermore, correlations between bulk density, specific surface area, and particle size are established.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the influence of single or multi-walled structures and surface functionalization on pulmonary toxicity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and to identify the underlying mechanisms. Mice were exposed to different doses of SWCNTs or MWCNTs, and inflammation and DNA damage were assessed. Transcriptomics analysis showed similar responses across all CNTs, with inflammation, cellular stress, metabolism, and DNA damage responses being affected. One pristine SWCNT was found to be the most potent and potentially fibrogenic, warranting further toxicity testing.

Summary: This study assessed the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of six reduced graphene oxides (rGOs) with different physico-chemical properties. The results showed that rGO with higher oxygen content exhibited higher cytotoxicity and early ROS-inducing potential, while rGO with lower density of oxygen groups showed genotoxic effects. Moreover, a higher number of layers seemed to be associated with a decreased potential for inducing cytotoxicity and ROS production.

Summary: Spodumene concentrate from the Pilbara region in Western Australia was characterized and studied for its major minerals, particle sizes, thermal behavior, and polymorph transformations. The study found that temperature significantly influences the transformation of spodumene polymorphs, with 1000 degrees Celsius suggested as the ideal processing temperature. The application of a first-order kinetic model yielded kinetic parameters confirming the strong temperature dependence for the spodumene polymorph transformations.

Summary: This research project investigated the physico-chemical, sensory, hygienic, and safety characteristics of raw goat milk, whey, brine, and traditional goat cheese during the ripening period. The results showed significant changes in the cheese's characteristics, including increased bitterness, intensified odor, and mold development, after a certain period of ripening. The study also highlighted the need for improved hygiene in the production processes and active monitoring of microbial safety in traditional foods.

Summary: The physico-chemical quality aspects of honey from northeastern Ethiopia were studied. Data analysis using R software revealed that the moisture, ash, acidity, diastase, sucrose, and pH contents were within the limits set for honey quality standards. However, the HMF and reducing sugars did not meet the European standard. Improvement is needed to make the honey exportable to the international market.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics, moisture contents, chemical fingerprints changes, and aflatoxins accumulation of Atractylodis rhizoma during storage, aiming to determine the optimum temperature and relative humidity conditions. The results identified the susceptible conditions for aflatoxins production and proposed suitable storage conditions for A. rhizoma, providing technical and data support for the scientific preservation of other food or herbs.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of alkali treatment on the morphology, chemical composition, tensile capabilities, structural changes, and thermal degradation of Acacia pennata stem fibers. SEM image and pXRD analyses support the improved surface roughness of the fibers after alkaline treatment. XRD analysis reveals an improved fiber crystallinity index, which is consistent with the SEM pictograms. Alkali-treated fibers exhibit a higher percentage of cellulose and ash, and a lower percentage of hemi-cellulose, lignin, pectin, wax, and moisture compared to untreated fibers. The low density and high cellulosic content of alkali-treated fibers enhance their suitability as fiber matrices. The thermal behavior of the fibers at various temperatures is demonstrated by TG-DTA analysis, and their tensile strength is also investigated.

Summary: In smallholder communal farming systems, Nguni people slaughter goats using indigenous methods which have cultural and spiritual significance to them, to assess meat physico-chemical characteristics parameters. Different slaughter methods have an impact on the meat texture and color of Nguni wethers, with some methods potentially resulting in fresher meat appearance.

Summary: This study discusses an advanced method for preparing highly crystalline NH4-form LSX zeolite under gentle drying conditions. Decationization of this form at moderate temperatures leads to the formation of BASs characterized by IR spectroscopy. The maximum concentration of three BASs can be achieved prior to the initiation of zeolite structure degradation at 200 degrees C. The high proton affinity and thermal decomposition of BASs result in a significant decrease in adsorption capacity.

Summary: This study investigated the physico-chemical surface properties of Microcystis and its relationship with extracellular polysaccharides (EPS). The results showed that the hydrophilicity, zeta potential, and charge of Microcystis did not vary with the cultivation stage. Microcystis wesenbergii had high surface free energy, EPS content, and growth rate during the logarithmic phase, while M. aeruginosa exhibited these characteristics during the stationary phase. EPS polysaccharide composition primarily influenced the specific surface area (SSA) and total surface energy, while EPS protein composition influenced hydrophobicity and surface tension. This study elucidates the significance of EPS in impacting the surface properties of Microcystis cells.
