This work investigated the potential immunomodulatory and growth-promoting effects of Astragalus polysaccharides CAPS) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The dietary supplementation with APS (1500 mg/kg of diet) caused a significant increase in growth parameters (initial and final weight, weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed intake (FI), when compared to non-supplemented control basal diet. In addition, APS upregulated the phagocytic activity, the respiratory burst activity, plasma lysozyme, the bactericidal activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and amylase activity. However, it had no effect on serum nitric oxide (NO) or Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. While APS had no effect of intestinal histology, a slight increase in the villi length was recorded. Collectively, our results indicate that dietary APS supplementation could improve the growth performance and the immune parameters of cultured tilapia fish. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Comparison propofol and eugenol anesthetics efficacy and effects on general health in Nile Tilapia

Eman Zahran, Engy Risha, Awad Rizk

Summary: The study found that propofol has longer induction and anesthesia duration compared to eugenol in fish anesthesia, while also having a faster recovery rate. In terms of hematological indices, the propofol group showed a transient increase compared to the eugenol group. However, there were no significant changes in other indicators such as leukocytic counts between the two groups. During anesthesia, both propofol and eugenol groups showed a temporary increase in glucose and cortisol levels, which returned to baseline levels during the recovery period.

Hesperidin ameliorates cisplatin induced hepatotoxicity and attenuates oxidative damage, cell apoptosis, and inflammation in rats

Dina M. Aboraya, Ayman El Baz, Engy F. Risha, Fatma M. Abdelhamid

Summary: This study evaluates the hepatoprotective effect of hesperidin against cisplatin-induced toxicity. The results demonstrate that hesperidin can improve the hematological, biochemical, molecular, and histopathological alterations caused by cisplatin through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties.

Summary: This study investigated the outbreaks of saprolegniasis in Nile tilapia farms in northern Egypt and its connection to water quality parameters. The study also examined the genetic diversity of saprolegnia isolates from different farms and the resulting ultrastructural lesions. Results showed significant variations in the prevalence of saprolegniasis among different regions and months. The genetic analysis revealed the presence of genetic diversity among the isolates.

Vitamin D Ameliorates the Hepatic Oxidative Damage and Fibrotic Effect Caused by Thioacetamide in Rats

Aya Megahed, Hossam Gadalla, Fatma M. Abdelhamid, Samah J. Almehmadi, Anmar A. Khan, Talat A. Albukhari, Engy F. Risha

Summary: Vitamin D-3 (VD3) plays a beneficial role in overcoming extensive liver fibrosis caused by thioacetamide (TAA) exposure. VD3 treatment improves liver function and reduces liver fibrosis measures. It decreases liver enzyme levels, bilirubin, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while increasing glucose and 25[OH]D-3 levels. VD3 also reduces oxidative stress and fibrosis-related gene expressions.

Nutritional and immunological evaluation of Nannochloropsis oculata as a potential Nile tilapia-aquafeed supplement

Eman Zahran, Samia Elbahnaswy, Fatma Ahmed, Iman Ibrahim, Asmaa A. Khaled, Elsayed A. Eldessouki

Summary: The marine microalga Nannochloropsis oculata has great potential for nutraceutical and functional food industry applications due to its bioactive compounds and high omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content. In this study, Nile tilapia fed diets supplemented with N. oculata showed improved growth performance, proximate composition, lipid profile, and gene expression pattern related to lipid metabolism and immune response. Histopathological examination confirmed the benefits and safety of N. oculata dietary inclusion. Overall, N. oculata is a promising nutraceutical for enhancing fish health and sustainability in aquaculture production.
