Procedures and equations reported in ISO 9920 for the correction of basic thermophysical clothing properties taking into account pumping effect and air movement are very different from those used by the Predicted Heat Strain (PHS) model in ISO 7933. To study the effect of these differences on the assessment of hot environments using the PHS model, an analysis focusing on the modelling of the dynamic thermal insulation and the vapour resistance of the clothing reported in ISO 9920 and ISO 7933 standards will be discussed in this paper. The results are useful evidence to start a discussion on the best practice for dealing with clothing thermophysical properties and underline the need to harmonize the entire set of standards in the field of the Ergonomics of the Thermal Environment. ISO 7933 is presently under revision.

On the measurement of the mean radiant temperature by means of globes: An experimental investigation under black enclosure conditions

Francesca Romana d'Ambrosio Alfano, Marco Dell'isola, Giorgio Ficco, Boris Igor Palella, Giuseppe Riccio

Summary: Mean radiant temperature is an essential physical quantity for evaluating thermal environments, with black globe thermometer being the most common measurement method. Studies have focused on factors like globe diameter, materials, and heat transfer modeling, but inconsistent results are due to difficulties in calibration. This study emphasizes on the accuracy of various types and sizes of globes through a metrological analysis in a controlled environment.

Assessment of SARS-CoV-2 airborne infection transmission risk in public buses

M. Bertone, A. Mikszewski, L. Stabile, G. Riccio, G. Cortellessa, F. R. d'Ambrosio, V. Papa, L. Morawska, G. Buonanno

Summary: Public transport environments play a crucial role in the global spread of SARS-CoV-2. This study applies a novel combination of risk assessment approaches to evaluate the contagion risk of susceptible individuals in public transport environments. The results highlight the importance of considering airborne transmission and implementing mitigation measures to maintain a reproductive number of <1.

Small globes and pocket heat stress meters for WBGT and PHS evaluations. A critical analysis under controlled conditions

Francesca Romana d'Ambrosio Alfano, Marco Dell'Isola, Giorgio Ficco, Boris Igor Palella, Giuseppe Riccio

Summary: This paper quantifies the effects of using small globes to assess extreme hot thermal environments. Results show that small globes underestimate WBGT values by 1°C, but this can be corrected using specific correction coefficients. However, pocket WBGT meters based on small globes and psychrometric sensors underestimate WBGT by more than 10°C, especially at low air velocity and high radiative loads. Additionally, the underestimation of mean radiant temperature measured through small globes leads to an underestimation of allowable exposure times predicted by the PHS model.

Working with Different Building Energy Performance Tools: From Input Data to Energy and Indoor Temperature Predictions

Francesca Romana d'Ambrosio Alfano, Bjarne Wilkens Olesen, Daniela Pepe, Boris Igor Palella

Summary: Energy consumption calculations and thermal comfort conditions assessment are crucial in building simulations with BEPS tools. Different software validation and operating conditions can lead to inconsistent predictions. This study clarifies building model preparation and input data definition for using different software. It also compares the energy and temperature output of two BEPS tools for the same building under the same weather conditions, showing differences in temperature values but agreement in energy predictions.

On the effects of the mean radiant temperature evaluation in the assessment of thermal comfort by dynamic energy simulation tools

Francesca Romana d'Ambrosio Alfano, Daniela Pepe, Giuseppe Riccio, Michele Vio, Boris Igor Palella

Summary: The European Directive 844/2018, EN 16798-1 and -2, and ISO 17772 Standards emphasize the consideration of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) when designing a new building or retrofitting an existing one. Thermal comfort, a crucial aspect of IEQ, is affected by the mean radiant temperature (tr), which cannot be directly controlled by HVAC systems. This paper compares different calculation methods of tr used by Energy Plus with the Design-Builder interface and analyzes their influence on thermal comfort evaluation in three buildings.

Moisture in historical buildings from causes to the application of specific diagnostic methodologies

Francesca Romana d'Ambrosio Alfano, Boris Igor Palella, Giuseppe Riccio

Summary: Moisture is a major factor in the deterioration of historical buildings. It increases U-values, weakens the structure, damages surfaces, and promotes the growth of fungi and molds. This article presents an objective diagnostic methodology for identifying and addressing moisture issues in masonries.
