Importance of the field: Cytokine-induced apoptosis inhibitor 1 (CIAPIN1) is a newly identified cytokine-induced apoptosis inhibitor, which has roles in cell division and angiogenesis. Owing to its prognostic value for human tumors and involvement in cancer progression and tumor cell resistance to anticancer agents, CIAPIN1 has been proposed as an attractive target for new anticancer interventions. Areas covered in this review: We define CIAPIN1's potential function as a new therapeutic target for anticancer interventions and this review covers all related literature on CIAPIN1 in cancer from the past 5 years What the reader will gain: Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that CIAPIN1 is associated with chemotherapy resistance, increased tumor recurrence and shorter patient survival in different human tumor models, making anti-CIAPIN1 therapy an attractive cancer treatment strategy. Recent studies also suggest that CIAPIN1 is expressed at low levels in some types of malignant tumors and that its overexpression may inhibit their proliferation or tumorigenesis. Take home message: Considering that the exact expression and function of CIAPIN1 are still not well characterized and understood, better knowledge of CIAPIN1 in normal versus tumor tissues will be instrumental for the design of optimal strategies to selectively disrupt CIAPIN1 in cancer.

Systematic review and meta-analysis: incidence and factors for progression to advanced neoplasia in inflammatory bowel disease patients with indefinite and low-grade dysplasia

Jian Wan, Xuan Wang, Yujie Zhang, Min Chen, Min Wang, Kaichun Wu, Jie Liang

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on the incidence and risk factors for advanced neoplasia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with indefinite for dysplasia (IND) and low-grade dysplasia (LGD). The pooled incidences of advanced neoplasia in IND and LGD patients were found to be similar, indicating the need for rigorous surveillance. Risk factors for advanced neoplasia included primary sclerosing cholangitis, aneuploidy, and other factors. Further research is needed to validate these findings.

Summary: The risk of ischemic heart disease is higher in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially in young female patients. C-reactive protein (CRP), plasma fibrinogen levels, and neutrophil count in the peripheral blood may be potential predictors associated with the occurrence of ischemic heart disease in patients with IBD.

Lepr+ mesenchymal cells sense diet to modulate intestinal stem/progenitor cells via Leptin-Igf1 axis

Summary: This study reveals that mesenchymal cells (MCs) surrounding the intestine can sense diet changes and modulate the function of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) through the secretion of IGF1. MCs play a critical role in maintaining the proliferation of ISC and progenitor cells, and these findings may provide a novel therapeutic target for gut diseases.

Gut Microbiota and Metabolite Changes in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis and Clostridioides difficile Infection

Jian Wan, Yujie Zhang, Wenfang He, Zuhong Tian, Junchao Lin, Zhenzhen Liu, Yani Li, Min Chen, Shuang Han, Jie Liang, Yongquan Shi, Xuan Wang, Lei Zhou, Ying Cao, Jiayun Liu, Kaichun Wu

Summary: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) are at a higher risk of developing Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), but the gut microbial structure and metabolites in UC and CDI patients have been poorly studied. This study identifies significant differences in gut microbiota and metabolites between UC and CDI patients compared to those with UC alone.

Inflammatory bowel disease-associated Escherichia coli strain LF82 in the damage of gut and cognition of honeybees

Ruqi Chang, Jieteng Chen, Zhaopeng Zhong, Yiyuan Li, Kaichun Wu, Hao Zheng, Yunsheng Yang

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease often experience cognitive impairment, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. In this study, researchers exposed honeybees to two different strains of E.coli and observed that the IBD-associated strain induced enteritis-like manifestations, cognitive behavioral modifications, increased gut permeability, and shortened lifespan in honeybees. The strain also altered the levels of certain substances in the honeybee gut and affected gene expression in the honeybee brain. This study suggests that honeybees can serve as a potential model for studying the microbiota-gut-brain interaction in IBD.
