Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) during pregnancy can have significant consequences for both the mother and the baby. Treating asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) can reduce the risk of low birth weight and preterm birth. Further research is needed to understand the complications of ASB and to explore preventive measures.

Summary: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common issue in pregnant women, and proper antibiotic selection is crucial for the safety of both mother and fetus. Multiple international guidelines provide recommendations for UTI treatment during pregnancy, with some variations but overall consensus on key points regarding antibiotic use.

Summary: The clinical relevance of bacteriuria after antibiotic treatment of complicated urinary tract infections is controversial. This study evaluated the impact of urine pharmacokinetics on the timing of recurrent bacteriuria in a clinical trial comparing oral tebipenem pivoxil hydrobromide and intravenous ertapenem. The prolonged urinary clearance and dwell time of ertapenem were associated with a temporal difference in the repopulation of bladder urine with bacteria following treatment, potentially confounding efficacy assessment.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of UTI among HIV patients in Ethiopia, finding that UTI was prevalent in HIV patients. However, factors such as gender, residency, CD4 count, catheterization history, and diabetes history were not statistically significant factors associated with UTI among people living with HIV.

Summary: This study supports the association between delirium and urinary tract infection in older adults, but insufficient evidence was found for the association between delirium and asymptomatic bacteriuria in this age group. The limitations of the study include the moderate quality of included studies and a lack of available research on the association between delirium and asymptomatic bacteriuria. Future research should focus on using high-quality approaches to define delirium and UTI, and consider asymptomatic bacteriuria in their investigations.

Summary: Urinary tract infections are common after kidney transplantation and can impact graft survival. Gram-negative microorganisms are the usual cause, but other pathogens like the BK virus should also be considered. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is often found in KT patients, but guidelines do not recommend routine screening or treatment.

Summary: FlowUTI is a shiny web application designed to establish optimal cut-off values for flow cytometry in urine samples from patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms. It provides a user-friendly graphical interface and robust statistical analysis, reducing the computational burden associated with this type of analysis. The application analyzed urine samples from neonates, infants, and elderly populations, and the source code is available on GitHub with online access provided.

Summary: The study found that the selective chromogenic, point-of-care culture system (UTid+) showed an acceptable level of accuracy when compared to conventional urine culture in diagnosing urinary tract infections. High agreement of identification results was observed, with an important exception being Proteus spp. UTid+ may be useful in scenarios where a common UTI pathogen is expected and rapid identification is ideal, although conventional urine culture remains the gold standard.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy and safety of retro-pubic tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) 20 years after implantation for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The results showed that TVT is a highly effective and safe option for the treatment of SUI, with no significant deterioration of subjective and objective cure rates over time. However, some patients experienced the onset of de novo overactive bladder (OAB) after 20 years of follow-up.

Summary: From the patient perspective, urodynamic evaluation (UDS) appears to be a well-accepted and well-tolerated diagnostic tool in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly when an appropriate explanation is provided before the examination. Patients value the objective information provided by UDS and that this outweighs the temporary invasiveness of the test. This information is particularly relevant in light of the relative lack of evidence in the literature about patient expectations of specialist care in functional urology, which may have hindered progress with quality of care.

Summary: In this study, a prognostic nomogram was developed to assess the risk of cervical dysplasia persistence/recurrence after primary conization. Variables such as diagnosis of CIN3, presence of high-risk HPV types, positive endocervical margins, HPV persistence, and omission of HPV vaccination after conization were found to significantly increase the risk of cervical dysplasia persistence/recurrence. The nomogram can be a useful tool for counseling women about their risk and the importance of HPV vaccination after conization.

Summary: This article discusses the design considerations for evaluating the value of urodynamic studies (UDS) in functional urology, suggesting that assessing the value of diagnostic tests based solely on treatment success is conceptually flawed. The article also provides recommendations for the design of a hypothetical randomized controlled trial, including considerations for study population, clinical endpoints, intervention and control group design, among others.

Summary: This study assessed the learning curve of residents with no previous experience in correctly performing and interpreting urodynamics, as well as managing patients with pelvic floor disorders based on urodynamic findings. The results showed that the number of exams performed was directly related to the duration of the procedure, perceived difficulty, need for consultant intervention, accuracy of interpretation, and appropriateness of the therapeutic proposal. It was found that completing a learning curve may require performing 5 uroflowmetries and 15 cystomanometries with pressure/flow studies.
