In Caucasian women, research has shown that energy balance and taste preference change throughout the menstrual cycle. However, the contributory role of the menstrual cycle to obesity and insulin resistance among Asian women remains unclear. We investigate the impact of the menstrual cycle on energy balance and taste preference in Singaporean Chinese females. Thirty-one healthy young Chinese female subjects with regular menstrual cycles were recruited. Anthropometrics, body composition, energy intake, resting metabolic rate, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) severity and taste preference to sucrose were assessed during three phases (menses, follicular and luteal), over one (N = 18) to two (N = 13) menstrual cycles. For all subjects (N = 31), we found significant reductions in energy, fat intake (p < 0.05) and taste preference for sucrose (p < 0.05) in the luteal phase compared to early follicular phase as far as Cycle 1 is concerned. No significant differences were observed for carbohydrate and protein intake as well as PMS score. In those evaluated for two full cycles (N = 13), we found that taste preference for sucrose and PMS score were significantly higher in the menstrual phase in Cycle 2 (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in energy and macronutrient intake throughout Cycle 2. RMR was similar across the three phases. However, non-significant cyclic variations were noted within and between the cycles. Cyclic variations in energy intake and expenditure contributed by sensory and behavioural changes occur during the menstrual cycle. Whether this contributes to cyclic weight gain is speculative and remains to be proven. Further research in non-Caucasians spanning more than one menstrual cycle is needed to establish the impact of the menstrual cycle on taste preference and energy balance.

Posture economy: the importance of metabolic state on metabolic phenotype assessment and the energy cost of sitting and standing. A whole body calorimetry trial

Stefan Gerardus Camps, Huann Rong Koh, Christiani Jeyakumar Henry

Summary: The effect of metabolic state on the energy cost of posture allocation was examined in this study. The difference between energy spenders and energy savers in a fasted state disappeared after the consumption of a meal. The findings suggest that metabolic state should be taken into account when assessing metabolic phenotypes.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using plant proteins as alternative emulsifiers in double emulsion fabrication, which can improve stability and lower production costs. Microcapsules formed by complex coacervation at pH 2 showed the highest stability, highlighting the effectiveness of this method for delivering bioactive compounds.

Sendhil Velan

Summary: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a promising weapon against obesity and metabolic disease, and its activity can be assessed through the release of exosomes from brown adipocytes in the blood plasma. In humans, the exosomal protein MTHFD1L can accurately and reliably reflect BAT activation.

Summary: This study investigates changes in amino acids, specifically branched chain amino acids (BCAA), during the transition from hyperthyroidism to euthyroidism and the impact of active brown adipose tissue (BAT) on BCAA metabolism. The results show that active BAT can potentially reduce circulating BCAA levels and help improve insulin resistance and metabolic health.

Summary: This study investigated the suitability of plant-based proteins and fats as substitutes for dairy ingredients in developing frozen desserts. The plant-based desserts had comparable nutrition profiles to dairy desserts but higher dietary fiber content, resulting in improved texture and taste. The desserts containing both chickpea protein concentrate and soymilk powder showed the highest sensory scores and can be a suitable food supplement for elderly individuals at risk of malnutrition.

Summary: In this study, the conservation between human and mouse lncRNAs was evaluated from various dimensions using multiple approaches, including sequences, promoter, global synteny, and local synteny. A total of 1,731 conserved lncRNAs were identified, with 427 high-confidence ones meeting multiple criteria. Conserved lncRNAs showed longer gene bodies, more exons and transcripts, stronger connections with human diseases, and were more abundant and widespread across different tissues compared to non-conserved ones. Transcription factor profile analysis revealed an enrichment of TF types and numbers in the promoters of conserved lncRNAs. A set of TFs that preferentially bind to conserved lncRNAs and exert stronger regulation on them were also identified.

Plant-based alternative proteins-are they nutritionally more advantageous?

Wesley Tay, Rina Quek, Joseph Lim, Bhupinder Kaur, Shalini Ponnalagu, Christiani Jeyakumar Henry

Summary: This study aims to model the replacement of a diet consisting of animal-based proteins with plant-based alternatives in a group of Asians. The results showed that the consumption of plant-based alternatives led to a significant increase in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sodium, and calcium intake, but a significant decrease in overall energy, protein, and fat intake. The substitution of animal-based proteins with plant-based alternatives may have benefits for bone health and individuals on a caloric restriction diet, but may also have negative effects on individuals with cardiovascular conditions and hypertension, as well as iron deficient populations.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases poses a considerable concern to healthcare organisations. This study aims to analyze the feasibility of prevention programs for patients with early chronic diseases, by determining the minimum reduction rate of incidence that leads to the break-even of underlying costs through a mathematical model. The proposed model demonstrates the efficiency and advantages of a diabetes prevention program and provides scientific principles for decision-makers in implementing interventions.
