Estrogen and serotonin play vital roles in the mechanism of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Cognitive deficit in the premenstrual phase contributes to impaired life function among women with PMDD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the difficulties in cognitive control and working memory (WM) in PMDD and to explore the effects of gonadotropic hormone and polymorphism of serotonin 1A receptor (HTR1A; rs6295) on cognitive deficit in PMDD. Women with PMDD completed diagnostic interviewing, questionnaire assessment, the Go/Nogo task, 2-back and 3-back tasks, and gonadotropic hormone analysis in the premenstrual and follicular phases. Further, they were followed up for two menstrual cycles to confirm two consecutive symptomatic cycles. A total of 59 subjects with PMDD and 74 controls completed all evaluation, fulfilled the criteria, and entered into the final analysis. The results demonstrated cognitive control and WM decline in the premenstrual among women with PMDD. The G/G genotype of HTR1A (rs6295) was found to be associated with impaired WM in the premenstrual phase and premenstrual decline of cognitive function. It also contributed to the vulnerability of cognitive function to the menstrual cycle effect and PMDD effect. As the G/G genotype of HTR1A (rs6295) involves in reducing serotonin neurotransmission, our results provide insight into the serotonin mechanism of cognitive function among women with PMDD.

Summary: This study demonstrates that intravesical instillation of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can decrease bladder inflammation and ameliorate bladder hyperactivity in a ketamine ulcerative cystitis (KIC) rat model. PRP treatment reduces inflammatory fibrosis, attenuates oxidative stress, promotes urothelial cell regeneration, and enhances angiogenesis and neurogenesis, thereby recovering bladder dysfunction.

Summary: This study examined the association between the number of chronic medications and the risk of mortality in older adults using population data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. The results showed a significant association between medication use and high mortality risk. This highlights the importance of recognizing the potential adverse effects of polypharmacy in optimizing drug regimens.

Summary: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is common in gynecological cancer patients and often goes unnoticed. This study aimed to explore the prevalence and clinical characteristics of CRF in these patients. The results showed that 77.9% of patients had received fatigue management, and a predictive model was developed to help identify high-risk patients.

Zinc Finger Protein 90 Knockdown Promotes Cisplatin Sensitivity via Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway in Ovarian Cancer Cell

Ching-Hu Wu, Chien-Wei Feng, Chiu-Lin Wang, Zhi-Hong Wen, Cheng-Yu Long, Feng-Hsiang Tang

Summary: Our data showed that cisplatin treatment induces production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that regulate apoptotic protein expression and stimulate anti-oxidative signal, inhibiting cell migration. The intervention of Zfp90 enhanced apoptosis pathway and inhibited migrative pathway, thus regulating the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin. This study suggests that loss of Zfp90 function promotes cisplatin sensitization in ovarian cancer cells through the regulation of Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, enhancing cell apoptosis and inhibiting migration.

Systematic Review of Roles of Arecoline and Arecoline N-Oxide in Oral Cancer and Strategies to Block Carcinogenesis

Albert Min-Shan Ko, Hung-Pin Tu, Ying-Chin Ko

Summary: Betel quid and areca nut are complex mixture carcinogens, but little is known about whether their derived single-agent arecoline or arecoline N-oxide (ANO) is carcinogenic, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this systematic review, recent studies on the roles of arecoline and ANO in cancer and strategies to block carcinogenesis were analyzed. The findings suggest that both arecoline and ANO are likely carcinogenic to humans and their mechanisms and pathways of carcinogenesis are useful indicators for cancer therapy and prognosis.

Summary: This research used machine learning to investigate the relationships between metal mixture in blood and kidney function, as well as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). The study found that certain metals were associated with TNF-alpha and kidney function, and machine learning models could accurately predict these outcomes in a multi-metal exposure scenario.

The Neuroprotective Effect of Isotetrandrine on Parkinson's Disease via Anti-Inflammation and Antiapoptosis In Vitro and In Vivo

Ching-Hu Wu, Kun-Ling Lin, Cheng-Yu Long, Chien-Wei Feng

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a highly influential disease worldwide, and current medications only provide relief for symptoms without slowing down disease progression. However, the plant-derived compound isotetrandrine (ITD) has been found to possess neuroprotective activity both in vitro and in vivo. ITD inhibits inflammatory-related protein and mRNA expression, improves locomotor deficiency, and reduces apoptosis in zebrafish models of PD. The neuroprotective effects of ITD may be mediated through anti-neuroinflammation and antiapoptosis pathways involving PI3K, ERK, and HO-1.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between the overall rest-stress distance measured by transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) and Q-tip test angle in women with urodynamic stress incontinence (USI), and determine the optimal cut-off value for predicting urethral hypermobility (UH). The results showed a strong correlation between the overall rest-stress distance in TPUS and Q-tip test angle, and a rest-stress distance of more than 13.3 mm was found to be an optimal cut-off value for predicting UH in women with USI.

Summary: The study investigated the 5-year drug survival of biologic agents in patients with psoriatic arthritis. The results showed that ustekinumab and etanercept had higher 5-year survival rates for psoriatic disease compared to adalimumab. This suggests that the therapeutic response of biologic agents may differ between different ethnic groups.
