Impoverished stream communities in agricultural landscapes have been associated with pesticide contamination, but conclusive evidence of causality is rare. We address this deficiency by adopting an experimental approach to investigate the effects of the insecticides cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos on benthic macroinvertebrates. Three treatments were established and a combination of biomarker, bioassay and biomonitoring approaches was employed to investigate, individual, population and community-level effects. Animals deployed during pesticide application had altered enzyme activity, depressed feeding rate and reduced survival, but these effects were only observed where pesticide was sprayed to the stream edge. There were no clear pesticide-related effects on macro invertebrate community structure or on the population densities of individual species. Hence, short-term pesticide exposure did cause individual-level effects in stream macroinvertebrates, but these were not translated to effects at the population or community-level and were effectively mitigated by the adoption of a no-spray buffer zone. Summary: There is a growing interest in using Ecological Production Functions (EPFs) to quantify connections between ecosystem structure, function, and the provision of ecosystem goods and services, leading to the possible extrapolation of toxicity data for test species to support environmental protection goals. EPFs may be useful in defining specific protection goals (SPGs) and can help predict and value most ecosystem services through the use of proxies for related taxa.

Integrating life cycle assessment and environmental risk assessment: A critical review

Rukayya Ibrahim Muazu, Rachael Rothman, Lorraine Maltby

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) and Environmental risk assessment (ERA) are highly complementary, and integration of the two approaches can provide a more comprehensive assessment of environmental impacts. However, current studies show that most integration methods tend to focus more on LCA or ERA, leading to challenges in addressing the needs of both approaches simultaneously. Common barriers to integration include data limitations and differences in model structures between LCA and ERA.

Assessing chemical risk within an ecosystem services framework: Implementation and added value

Lorraine Maltby, Ross Brown, Jack H. Faber, Nika Galic, Paul J. Van den Brink, Oliver Warwick, Stuart Marshall

Summary: The ecosystem services (ES) approach to chemical risk assessment has potential advantages and challenges, as discussed in a multi-stakeholder workshop. There was consensus on the added value of adopting an ES-based approach for regulatory decision making, which provides a 'unifying approach' across environmental compartments. Key to realizing this added value is a shift towards considering exposure-effect distributions and the development of integrated systems-level approaches.

Functional measures as potential indicators of down-the-drain chemical stress in freshwater ecological risk assessment

Laura J. Harrison, Katie A. Pearson, Christopher J. Wheatley, Jane K. Hill, Lorraine Maltby, Claudia Rivetti, Lucy Speirs, Piran C. L. White

Summary: This study reviewed the published literature to identify potential functional indicators of down-the-drain chemical stress and improve the ecological relevance of ecological risk assessment (ERA). The researchers found variations in the use of the term ecosystem function and emphasized the importance of distinguishing measures of processes from measures of the capacity for processes. They suggested that including indicators directly connected to processes can enhance the detection of impacts on ecosystem functioning. Leaf litter breakdown, oxygen production, carbon dioxide consumption, and biomass production were identified as potential functional indicators. However, further study is needed to fully implement and interpret these measures within an ERA and regulatory context.

Linking freshwater ecotoxicity to damage on ecosystem services in life cycle assessment

Susan A. Oginah, Leo Posthuma, Lorraine Maltby, Michael Hauschild, Peter Fantke

Summary: Freshwater ecosystems face threats from chemical pollution, and there is a need for mechanistic models and frameworks to translate ecotoxicity data into damage on species diversity, functional diversity, and ecosystem services. This paper proposes an evaluation of available approaches to characterize the damage of chemical pollution on freshwater ecosystem services, and presents possible stepwise approaches to link ecotoxicity effects to species loss, functional diversity loss, and damage on ecosystem services. Harmonization of assumptions and boundary conditions is needed to integrate this pathway into life cycle assessment and other comparative frameworks.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.
