Oxidative stress has been involved in the aetiology of hypertension, insulin resistance, the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. Several epidemiological studies suggest that a diet rich in natural antioxidants is associated with protective effects against major diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. The Mediterranean diet is rich in fat and foods with important antioxidant properties, such as fruits and vegetables, olive oil, and nuts. In this review we focus on epidemiological evidence and clinical trials that relate the Mediterranean diet with oxidative stress markers. We focus our review on two important Mediterranean vegetable sources of potentially oxidized fat-olive oil and nuts.

Summary: This study examined the association between adherence to an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet and the amount of CO2 emissions in an older adult population. The findings suggest that the Mediterranean diet can contribute to lower total dietary CO2 emissions, indicating its potential environmental benefits.

Lack of association between endocrine disrupting chemicals and male fertility: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Maria Angeles Martinez, Montse Marques, Albert Salas-Huetos, Nancy Babio, Jose L. Domingo, Jordi Salas-Salvado

Summary: The incidence of infertility currently affects about 15% of the world's population, with male factors accounting for 40-50% of the cases. Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is suspected to be involved in these reproductive disorders. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between male exposure to EDCs and male fertility through clinical and observational studies. The results showed high heterogeneity among studies and no significant association between EDC exposure and sperm parameters, except for a positive association between PCB153 exposure and sperm concentration that was not clinically relevant. Further investigations are needed to understand the potential harmful effects of EDCs on male fertility.

Loss of Visceral Fat is Associated with a Reduction in Inflammatory Status in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Martinez-Gonzalez, Josep Vidal, Miguel Ruiz-Canela, Jadwiga Konieczna, Emilio Sacanella, Jesus Francisco Garcia-Gavilan, Montse Fito, Ana Garcia-Arellano, Ramon Estruch

Summary: This study found that excessive visceral adipose tissue is associated with increased secretion of pro-inflammatory molecules, leading to systemic inflammation and obesity-related metabolic disturbances. The reduction in visceral adipose tissue is associated with improvements in various inflammatory and adiposity markers, especially insulin, c-peptide, and PAI-1 levels, which may contribute to a decrease in cardiometabolic disturbances observed in obesity.

Summary: This work systematically assessed the pharmacokinetics, urinary recovery, and bioavailability of hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) and their metabolites. It was found that C-6-C-3 cinnamic acids, such as caffeic and ferulic acid, had the highest blood concentrations, while their excretion in urine was lower than hydroxybenzene catabolites. A comprehensive study investigating the ADME of HCAs from different dietary sources is urgently required.

Vegetable and Fruit Intake Variety and Cardiovascular Health and Mortality: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies found that greater variety in vegetable and fruit consumption may reduce all-cause mortality, but no significant associations were observed with cardiovascular-related mortality or morbidity. The certainty of the evidence was graded as low or very low. Additional high-quality studies are needed to better understand the role of variety in vegetable and fruit consumption in cardiovascular health.
